Yeah! We could be totally annihilated from this planet!

When getting all gleeful about Nukes try and put yourself in the shoes of someone who lives in Hiroshima.

Actually, a good idea. Those people living there today (or their parents) survived the war because the A-bomb was dropped. They didn't get themselves killed piloting kamakazes or human torpedos, or strap satchel charges of explosives to themselves and throw themselves under Sherman tanks, or charge rifle- and SMG-armed soldiers and Marines while armed with nothing but bamboo spears. And they survived because the nuclear bombings made Japan surrender instead of fighting to the death. It also saved lots of lives among the men who would have made up the invasion force, and before the more rabid America-haters come on, remember that Britain would also have taken part in the invasion, so some of YOUR fathers got saved as well.

Getting back to the present (or future), remember that all the alien invasions so far have been fictional. How will you feel about nukes if they SUCCESSFULLY turn back or destroy a real alien invasion?

Good theory there, but I would still feel terrible about them. Remember that the nukes were wildly tested during the Cold War, and that we were unknowingly and unwillingly were on the brink of extinction (self-annihilation).

Alland just because those two bombs ended the war and actually saved lives, and ultimately Japan itself does not make them good.
Its like a pact was made with the devil.
They are nasty, dirty, weapons, and that is that. There is no honour in them.
The Americans had to create them for fear of Germany beating them to and that would have been hell. But it don't make them okay.
And they wouldn't save us against an alien invasion.
Lets face it, beyond the realms of stories, any alien invasion, would be a success. They would no doubt use Nano technology or something un thought of to take us over without even having to enter our atmosphere till the job is done.

That depends on the alien civilization involved and the planet it comes from. Remember, with aliens we're talking about beings from a different world than our own, with different resources. Suppose their world doesn't have uranium or other fissionable materials? They're not going to have or even conceive of nukes, no matter how smart they are. Suppose they're naturally blind and find their way about via sound instead of by sight? They won't know about light, which means no lasers. Or the reverse, where they have sight but are deaf? They don't know about sound waves, so no radar, sonar, radios, or sonic weaponry. Or they come from a world with no sand or other sources of silicon? No glass, and more importantly in the modern age, NO COMPUTER CHIPS, and hence no computers, at least none comparable to our own. Even the smartest aliens have to work with what's available, at least initially.

You're beginning to make the course going Star Trek, Alland.

Well if they can cross the galaxy in some sort of space craft, and make the effort of coming here to INVADE us then you can bet your arse, they are not going to just jump right in and lose, they are going to win. they have a huge advantage over us. They have our planet in range, we don't even know were they come from. So they could waste us from space. Crash a comet into us, do what they want, without us even knowing they are there.

Alland has made some very good points there. in some things the aliens may be greatly advanced compared to us, but in other things they could appear very primitive they may have senses we can not even conceive of and yet they may be blind, deaf, no sense of smell, taste or touch. when you are talking about Aliens you have to think alien thoughts and not try to compare with Earths creatures.

Yes I know. And I'm sure the universe is full of aliens that have all of allands suggsetions and more. But I was talking about Aliens who come here to invade us. Come to take our Earth. And it seems likely that the ones who bother to do that, are going to be pretty good at it.

Also ellements missing from an alien world won't mean they can't concieve of them. We know pure carbon exists without it existing on Earth. We know black holes exist, without them existing on our Earth.

If an alien attack force has no nukes because they have never come across any ellements needed to create them then so what, they will have something to attack us with and like I say with the advantage point of being beyond our atmosphere it would be relitavely simple for them to knock us out.
They could have energy beams of some sort that could instantaneously melt the ice caps, cause super volcanoes to erupt, move the tectonic plates, stop the tides, increase wind speeds, higher or lower global temperatures, block out the sun light, extinguish the earths inner fire, strip away the ozone, boil our oceans, rip the moon out of orbit.

They could simply put something in the water that makes us forget everything, and reduce us to animals.

The Aliens in Arther C Clarks Childhood's End, order us to stop harming animals, they give us a dead line, the Spanish ignore it and have a bull fight, as the first spear pentetrates the bull, the Aliens somehow make everybody in Spain feel the same pain.

That's a good example of what powers might exist out there.

Our development may take them by surprise, the last time they visited Earth 2,000,000 years ago we were no more than smart apes, now look at us, no other creature (to their knowledge) has come so far in such a short time. they may not be expecting much opposition.
