They did. It was revealed that the aliens weren't from Mars (due to the fact that over time Mars was studied more closely by us and had no evience of life as descripted in the '53 movie), but from some kind of garden planet.
The Tempest is an advanced assault vehicle, which carries two heavy Heat-Rays and a Canister Launcher.

Nope, those alien creatures obvieously don't like our presence on Earth. But we as the Human race have lived on this planet already for more than 3 million years. All animals were here even earlier though... The spiders for example are here for more than 380 millon years, and most insects are even older than spiders!
