Which Fighting Machines do you prefer and why?
1) Pendragon
2) Parramount 2005
3) Parramount 1953
4) Asylum
5) Jeff Wayne Animation.

I like the Fighting Machines from the 1953 movie and Jeff's animation. They're simply the best to me.
As far as I'm concerned I find Pendragon rubbish, I've got no opinion on the Asylum version and Spielberg version is ok.
The Tempest is an advanced assault vehicle, which carries two heavy Heat-Rays and a Canister Launcher.

5) Jeff Wayne Animation.
First: Paramount '05 -- Tripods closest to book. Good sense of size and unstoppability.
Second: Asylum -- More than three legs, but appropriately 'mean' looking.
Third: Paramount '53 -- Always liked the droop-winged 'swans'. The zapping 'eye' creeped me out as a kid.
Fourth: Jeff Wayne -- not as familiar with these, but felt the legs were too thin, the bodies too spherical. Reminded me more of a daddy-long-legs spider.
Last: -- Hines/Pendragon -- head/hood too puny to seem intimidating. Apparent fnish too akin to a cheap chrome-plated plastic knick-knack.

Mine are
Parramount 05 - almost perfect.
Jeff wayne - although they seem rigid. But those hoods are soooo spooky
Parramount 53 - shame about the legs but beautiful and menacing.
Don't like the other two but will go with Pendragon just to look at over Asylum.

Thus you mean the legs used by Jeff's FMs?

Yes and no, I like the angular appearance of Jeff's/Michael Trim's FM. But I don't like the way the legs radiate out around the body.
In nature animals have their legs fixed under the body to bare the bodys weight. except reptiles who have their legs fixed at 90 degrees to the body, this means for them to walk or run they have to throw their weight from side to side just to lift a foot of the ground, if a FM had to do this the Martian inside would look like a milkshake in no time.

Actually, only warm-blooded animals have their legs directly under their bodies. Cold-blooded ones spend most of their time lying on their bellies instead of actually standing or walking. It's not just reptiles: amphibians do it, too, as well as all those invertebrates (mainly the arthropods) that have legs at all. All of them have legs jutting out at the side.

That's true, cold-blooded animals need to warm up or cool down.

I like the rubbery legs of the Parramount FM's. They remind me of me after a night on the town.

Actually, the Pendragon machines weren't that bad in design. The thing that spoiled them was the clumsy animation (sometimes you see the entire machine slide forward instead of walking on its legs). Aside from them, I've only seen the machines in the two Paramount films. (I ordered the Asylum version from Amazon, but they're taking their own sweet time delivering the thing, and after reading the spoilers in the Asylum section, I am beginning to expect the worst.) The machines from the '53 flick didn't follow the book, but they were creepy enough. In the later Paramount film, the machines were both tripods and scary, particularly at night or in cloudy weather.

So, what is in your opinion the best adaptation to the book, according to the movies?

Best ADAPTATION TO THE BOOK (as opposed to technical details like skill in animation) has to be the Pendragon machines. What really topped them over the latest Paramount version is the fact that they were still armed with the Heat-Ray, as opposed to that stupid "create empty clothes" ray Spielberg came up with.

The Martian Victory/Human Defeat Sequence in the PC game is awesome. In that sequence the Big Ben gets destroyed, but in a more credible way.

05 because I like the design more than the others, it seems more alien than the preview designs and more daunting and intimidating!
