The old one was a bit hit and miss. Mostly miss. But this new take on the old show is fantastic. Very gritty and pollitical. Quite sexy too.
Anyone seen it?

Yes I've watched the new series, I realy enjoyed it. Didn't see the old 70's series so I can't compare.

The old one was a poor mans Star Wars. Lucas even tried suing them, but failed. Frank Herbert also tried to sue lucas, over similararities between Star Wars and Dune. But you can't own ideas. And he lost too.

I'm a fan of Herbert's Dune but I can't see that there is much resemblance to Star Wars :-s

It's recently on the Dutch television. I don't know which channel it is on, though, I should check the tv-guide on that...

Desert planet = Dune = Tatooine

Fighting with swords

Empire ruling the Galaxy

Emporer

Sand people = Fremen = Tuskan Raiders

Religion = Force

Spice in Dune - Spice mines of Kessle mentioned in Star Wars.

Moisture stills in Dune - Moisture Evaporaters in SW.

Bene Gesserits can kill witha word and make you do things as can Jedi's with the force.

There are more, but they are ideas and you can't own ideas. Lucas admitted to reading Dunec just before making Star Wars to get ideas.

Yes I see what you meen, but you could say that about a lot of Sci/Fi books, a lot of those appear in Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'John Carter of Mars' books and probably dozens of other books as well.
It's like saying 'Planet of the Apes' is a copy of 'King Kong' because they both have Apes in them and both have Jungles and a scene on a beach and I belive there was a tree as well that looked very similar. :D If you look hard enough you will always find similaritys no matter how tentative :D

Yeah I totally agree with you. Herbert tried to sue Lucas and lost. And rightly so. But Lucus obviuosly did get a lot of influence from Dune.

As for more, I can't remember the rest. Dune is very politiacl and so is Star Wars.

Independence Day has on its turn similarities with War of the Worlds: Aliens attacking Earth, Earthlings make the first counter attack without success, the computer virus in ID4 is used as the replacer for the virus in WOTW. The similarity is that the aliens got defeated that way.

The big difference is that if both invasions had happened on alternate worlds then the ID4 invasion would have been succesful. WOTW would have failed.
The virus we download in ID4 would not have been compatible with their comupters. i doubt they are windows friendly. And they would never have got that space craft off the ground.

But they did have one of the Alien fighter to make sure the software could be adapted. I'll forgive them that one. 8)

You've got a point there.

They'd never get the craft working. And they'd never be able to use its computers to convert something cookeed up on our own. They would be completely alien to each other.

So by the making of the movie itself they used alternatives to make it look they did the job. What I really liked is the powering up of the City Annihilator Beam, the primary weapon of the big ship, which caused the destruction of L.A., New York, Washington D.C. Paris, Berlin, London, Moscow and many other places. The sound of the poering up thrills me!

A computer langueage is just mathematics and it has to follow a universal law and the best way to carry it, is in a form of binary.

The language of the universe is mathematics. But I'm still not having it.

What is your favorite language in all Sci-Fi series overall? My favs are English and Klingon (Yes, Klingon is also a language, and some Star Trek fans even speak it!)

I recently got the chance to watch the whole season as I never caught it on on its initial run and I really enjoyed it. Alot more rustig and darkers than the original and some great story telling.
