The album was like a rock opera with some fantastic music and narration from richard burton and featured some of the most infuential musicians of the time (late 70's).
If you've never heard it , it is highly recommended and brings the story to life in a very unique, scary and exciting way.

Sorry :o Are you from this planet? :alien2: , Jeff Wayne's album was released in 1978 and has barely been out of the UK album charts since. it most be one of the biggest selling records of all time. It sticks pretty close to the book with some minor changes.

If you haven't heard it, it's a must :)

In a few months it is being re-released in a super duper 5.1 mix in various boxsets with behind the scenes stuff and other goodies... I've started saving already..
There's also the 'Ulladubulla' remix album that came out a few years back too.

The Jeff Wayne Musical is how I discovered the War of the Worlds, a freind of my sister brought a copy round and I was transfixed and begged my Mum and Dad to by a copy of our own. I listened to it everyday for years. It's great album, basically a narration of the story from the Journalist point of view, with some dialogue with the Artillary Man and the Curate or OParson as he called on the Album. There are five songs too. One about Ogalvie's belief that there is no life on Mars. One about the Thunderchild Attack and loss, one about the Journalist missing his woman. (Carrie, who is living in London and therefore a bit of of a change to his wife in the book), one about the curates belief in the Martians being Devils. And one about the Artillary Man's belief in a Brave New World. The music is fantastic, Orchestrated and Electronic. The Ullas are out of this world. No Alloos though I'm afraid. You'll love it

Oh yeah, and a fantastic booklet of artwork depicting, the cylander on Horsal Commen, The Route of London. The Thunderchild being ripped aspart by the Heat Ray, The Curates vision of himself trying to burn the Martian Tripods with his holy cross, (A picture based on Dali's long legged Ellephants one, name escapes me), one of the red weed, one of the vision of A Brave New World underground and finally the Martians being eaten by birds. Plus newer versions have some pencil work.
Go get it Floyd.

Keep in mind that here in the States, the album barely appeared. I remember as a kid hearing that someone was going to do it, then I saw it years latter in a catalog of stuff. It never made the charts. I remember being a bit bewildered at the time, thinking that it was going to be a stage production. "How the Hell...?"
