I think there's a lot of things about the Martians that made sense 100+ years ago and don't now. The notion of mainlining blood from another species for sustenance seems a bit iffy, as does an ecosystem that hasn't developed microorganisms. (Even if they don't have putrefying bacteria, one would imagine there would be some kind of microscopic life that would have made them more wary about potential risks.)

I think one way of reinterpreting some of the Martians' technological eccentricities would be to simply look at it as a very alien intelligence that has developed in a different way. I keep thinking of Stephen King's "Tommyknockers" who are technically proficient but intellectually dim ("Edisons" but not "Einsteins".) I could see the Martians as almost being a reverse of this in some areas.

In an interview, Hines did a have a good answer for doing a modern setting and retaining much of the same Martian technology: They whack the Earth with an EMP bust first which renders all electrical equipment useless, then invade.

But then you'd have a build up of ashes. And the journalist does say that the Martians didn't bury their dead and even if they did they'd soon run out of space over time.

I suppose it could be argued that the Martians do ultimately dispose of their dead somehow under normal circumstances, but they don't feel any haste to do so for health reasons.

The Martian's feeding seems a bit more problematic to me, although I can see it serves a narrative purpose in reducing the status of humans and increasing the horro and alien-ness of the Martians. Even if the Martians have some weird way of absorbing blood from other species (Although if they could overcome that, they should be able to figure out how to store blood without needing a living donor.) it seems like an inefficient system. Not getting stomach aches is great and all, but the Martians are totally dependent on live creatures who have blood for sustenence. This means that in a pinch, they don't the options for obtaining nutrients that we do. (And have to devote more resources in it's pursuit.)

That feeding martian is one of the most disturbing and realistic impressions i have ever seen, its exactly how i imagined such a scene would look in all its horror and the martian vista with the cannon is fantastic!!!!

That Martian might just have sixteen tenticals.
Looks like it has a backbone though. Martians have no bones. And big brown eyes not white ones.

Still creepy though!

I drew a Martian a few months back, but I hadn't read the book in awhile, hence only six tentacles and an earhole on the side of the head instead of the back.

http://www.acidkeg.com/hgmartian.gif

Hey Guys, even George Pal thought the Martians were a bit backward.

Coz if not then why does the Martian tap a woman on the shoulder? I mean come on, the Martians are burning everyone alive and toppling cities like nobodys buisness. and the next salute ones tapping you on the shoulder, like your just going to turn around and say hello. I mean what's it thinking? It gets an axe in the Kyber. Not exactly very inteligent that is it? It's like going up to a tiger after you've just killed its cubs and tapping it on its tail!!!!
well that doesnt necessarily show Pal considered the Martians "backward" it just shows he wanted to put a bit of a horror film moment. God knows what the Martian was up to but it got what it deserved for such stupidity.

Possibly lacking common sense is not exclusively a human trait?

It's The Martian equivilant to the woman running into the dark woods in a horror movie. if he wanted to create horror why didn't he have some Martians grab someone and do something nasty to them, like experiments?

i really dont think he was trying to portray the invaders as backwards. It would have added nothing to the movie and added a lot of screentime to have experiments done on someone. I dont know why Pal put that bit in, i can only speculate what he thought the Martian's reason for believing going unarmed to face pissed off humans with an axe was going to end well for it but that doesnt default the reason to being the Martian was "backward"
