The answer to your first question is; yes, you are partially correct, but it turns out to be a lot more complicated than just killing the red-weed off.

And as for your second question I have already written the script for it and I'm about to start the pictures now, so
hopefully I'll be posting it in a week or so.

I have actually read the original novel a few times.

That's good because a lot of the jokes won't make sense if you hadn't read the book, such as, the reason the Martians don't use wheels.
I know a lot of people have only seen the films or heard Jeff Wayne's musical version and I'm sure a lot of this goes over their heads.
