Would Martian skin ever Tan, given how little light Mars gets? (Assuming that they'd evolve such a reaction anyway)

Yes, probably easier than ours because although the sun's rays are weaker, the Martian atmosphere is much thinner and they have no Ozone layer.
It's something Kim Stanley Robinson mentions in his Mars trilogy.

I can't believe that you comment on that in a spoof such as this.
Lonesome. It's great keep it coming. Those poor Martians are burning us by accident. If only we knew.

He he. Out at last. But they are not as methodical as the Martians what got written about are they. Leaving a walker behind. Ooh they'll pay for that.
Love the walkers. Got a great 50's feel to them.

The Martians did leave a walker behind in the original story it just wasn't mentioned because the journalist was at home writing an account for his newspaper before he sank into a restless, haunted sleep, so he didn't see it. We may be thinking along similar lines. I was wondering if this would be the first version of WOTW in which the Artilleryman actually gets to be the hero.
I can see it now: The bumbling trio returning to the pit, staggering under the weight of London Bridge (I assume that's what the metallic mass they detected was), probably blaming Bob for everything that went wrong. Then, abruptly, they see the walker they left behind rising up on improvised legs, while inside the hood, the bearded features of James Lathrop are set in a kind of grim exaltation as he begins to work the Heat-Ray (excuse me, SCANNER) of his machine and blow the Martians off the face of the Earth. "And behold! Man has come back to his own!" he shouts for public consumption, all the while secretly thinking "So there's a gulf between my dreams and my powers, is there? I showed that H.G. Wells bloke something, and now he owes be fifty quid."

I like the idea but I already have plans for that machine, as you have already guessed it wasn't abandoned casually, it still has a role to play
The metal deposit Stan is referring to is actually the Charing Cross rail and foot bridge, an impressive iron bridge.

I've been lurking in this thread, simply watching events unfold, but I had to say how brilliantly it's shaping up! Fab stuff!
