On Saturday I received an advanced model of the Martian Handling Machine model. The model is not on sale as of yet, but hopefully the delay won't last that long. The model sent to me came directly from Comet Miniatures as a preview model (free of charge - thank you Comet Minatures).
It certainly will look very nice once completed and is too scale with the Martian Fighting Machine.
(Horsell_Common Collection)(Handling Machine design is copyright of "Ollie Record Productions")

I think it's great that you've received this model but I always feel the models never live up to Trim's original design. looking at the Hood (eyes) on the model, they look like a couple of half marbles stuck on the surface where as trim's design for the Hood looks like a pair of much bigger spheres behind the body armour (see pic below) not stuck on the surface. I felt the same about Comet's Fighting Machine. Sorry to be so negative but I think they could do better.
How big is the model?

I agree with you, the eyes are not only too small but the wrong shape, so these will be going and replaced. Also you will see from my photo that the hood has a unusual ridge running around the body - again this will be removed.
The model is too scale with the Fighting Machine that [i]Comet Miniatures released. Now has I have both I can start work on a diorama.

I was so bugged by the eyes I hadn't noticed the ridge running around the body, I'm glad to hear this will be removed. I don't know why the model makers feel it's necessary to mess around with a classic design, haven't they seen Trim's sketches and blueprints. I remember the FM's legs has a thick bulge halfway down. WHY? is it to strengthen the legs or what? all it does is spoil the sleek look of the original design.
I was working on a model of Trim's design many years ago, before I decided to design my own FM and I tried to be as accurate as possible, sure I got some bits wrong like the compound eye effect as seen in the 'Dead London' painting, My model is probably a lot bigger than Comet's so the detail would be much harder on a small scale model, (mine is 17.5cm from nose to tail and stands 42cm high) but they are professionals with the proper materials, tools and equipment, I wish they had done a better job and stuck to the original designs.
So what does Jeff think of Comet's efforts?

No you can't have it. Lonesome gives me all the little FMs he knocks up. He's been working on a full sized version of his own design for me for nealry a year now. Thinking of having it in the back garden.

Gone for a BURTON wrote: Awesome model mate. Ummm can I have it I wants it No, it's my precious Gone for a BURTON wrote: What materials do you use. Can you explain the process a little? I can, a skeleton of the body was made of 2mm thick cardboard, all the spaces between each section of board was filled with expanded polystyrene and glued in, when set the whole thing was sanded back to a nice even finish, I then rolled out sheets of 'Milliput to about 1mm thick and laid it on top of the polystyrene and between the exposed cardboard ribs I think I took photos as the model progressed, I'll try to find them. Loz wrote: He's been working on a full sized version now there's a thought below is a larger version of trim's design, I started work on it about 25 years ago and decided it would end up being about 5 foot high and I didn't have anywhere to put it, so I quit work on it, that's why it looks so rough, it was going to have little lights behind the hood and a servo on the heat ray. always too ambitious. as you can see from the second photo the newer model is quite a bit smaller, about 42cm / 17inches high.
Sorry H-C I seem to have Hijacked your thread I'll start a new one tomorrow.
Can't wait to see your diorama.

I rolled out a bit of Milliput to about 1mm thick and waited until it was firm enough to pick up without leaving fingerprints and pressed it into the perforated grill that covered a loudspeaker, carefully pealed it off and laid it over a ping-pong ball then cut it to shape when it was set, and repeated the method for the other eye

That's right!

Well I hope you've got a lot of patients, it's not often I get round to finishing a piece first time round, for instance, I have a scratch built model of Nemesis' craft 'BLITZSPEAR' I think you would love, I started it about 20 years ago and still haven't finished it yet.
