This is the first picture of a Fighting Machine that was other than the Jeff Wayne depictions. I fell in love with it straight away and so my quest for other interpretation began. I'll post a few here. Anyone else is welcome to do the same.

The Roger Dean design has been one of my favourites for years.
This series of painting was done for Jeff's album but was rejected for trim's design, I prefer these.
They are usually called the Dean brother's designs, but I think I am right in saying they are Roger Dean's design, the pictures were painted by Tim white & Richard Clifton-Dey, this small section from the Tunder Child scene was created by Richard Clifton-Dey

That Rogers design is pretty good. Quite similar to the new 2005 WotW!

I think it's available as a kit. I have some photos here.
If it's not a bought kit, then someone has done a great job reproducing it from the paintings and the designs =D>

The model of the Dean design is scratchbuilt - as far as I know, that design has never been commercially produced. It's one of my faves, BTW.

I found those images a couple of years ago on an IPMS site and sent them to Dr Zeus a few months ago (having re-found them on a CD backup I'd fortuitously done before a disastrous HD crash last year). However, the site I found them on never credited the modelmaker.

A couple of months after the good Dr posted one of them on his site, the chap who built it happened to see the image on Dr Zeus and emailed me to say hello! His name is Ed Buckley, and he built it in the late '80s. He's going to dig out more stuff and send it to me, but he's recently moved house so everything is topsy turvey...

Here's what Ed himself has to say:

'A little background on the model:

I started working on prototype parts back in the mid 80's. I starting working on it seriously in 88 and finished it in 89. Took it to an IPMS regional in Omaha, Nebraska a couple weeks after completion and took best in its category, class, and judges grand best of show.

All of pictures of the construction (still packed) were taken with a 35mm camera, so I don't have anything that can be sent by e-mail. I will try to photograph them with my digital camera (when I find the box that it is in) and send those.

When I first started it, I made it so the legs could move. The pistons on the back of the legs actually moved in and out with the leg action. I did this so that at final assembly time, I could position the legs with the body on in a natural position and then glue them in place.

The model was made using Evergreen Plastic, Conrail Rods and Tubes, a couple of different types of body putty, brass and aluminum tubing, a short length of guitar string (at the back of the head), and 6 fender guitar picks (two each at the base of each leg).'

I think the hydraulics make that design look far too human-built, rather than strange and alien, and the lack of tentacles automatically places it on my bad side. Those glimmering ropes of steel just complete the package for me.

Thanks McTodd and thanks Ed =D> I hope you are reading this, I think your work is fantastic, and your interpretation of Roger Deans design is spot on =D>

Actually I can see that. Seems like a design made in the steam era...but it still doesn't retract from its cool lookingness.

Oh, he won't mind, because when I originally posted those images on wotwonline I told him (and that, of course, was after he saw the image I had posted on Dr Zeus anyway).

I'm in two minds about this design. It is a great design as a war machine, but it is very against the descripton in the book. The arm holding the heatray spoils it for me, but ten out of ten for the visable Martian drver. Believe it or not, the art book that conatained the Dean WOTW project wehich was published in the early 80's was my soul christmast present from my mum that year.

It's like a machine holding that thing instead of carrying. :-k

This is a fantastic depiction of the Handling Machine and driver. I only found it recently.

Indeed.
The Martian standing in front of it is a bit too simple, but I can write that off to the picture being dark and spooky.
