WAR of the Worlds enthusiasts can join Woking historian Iain Wakeford this weekend for three walks in Woking dedicated to the classic tale.

Iain will guide people around the scenes featured in HG Wells’ science fiction novel about alien invasion set in the Woking area.
The first walk, Eve of the War, is tomorrow starting at Horsell Common car park in Shores Road at 7pm.
The second, The Fighting Begins, is on Saturday starting from the entrance to the Lion Retail Park in Oriental Road, Maybury at 7pm.
The final walk entitled Death and Destruction takes place on Sunday at 2pm, meeting at the junction of Pyrford Common Road with Old Woking Road.
Mr Wakeford said: “The walks are a gentle stroll and not far.
“On the way round I will be reading extracts from the book and can explain what the area would have looked like in Wells’ day.”
The walks are suitable for people with pushchairs but wheelchair users would find the terrain difficult.
Anyone who wishes to take part should just turn up on the day and the fee is by way of donation at the end of the walk.

Thanks for the info, Lee. But I've got my school to attend, so I can't be there.

Why stop with walks and descriptions? Why not throw in a few special effects? Plant fire bombs which can be detonated by remote control into buildings, bushes, groves of trees, etc., and then set them off right after touching said areas with a searchlight beam or something to simulate the Heat-Ray. Don't even tell the homeowners what you're doing; when they see their homes going up in smoke, they'll act just like their counterparts in the novel did, greatly increasing the realism. And as for people who have trouble getting around, just run over them. Even Wells mentioned at the end of the Heat-Ray chapter about three of the casualties being two women and a little boy who weren't burned, but trampled to death by the panicking crowds. Oooh, oooh, and once they're trampled and helpless, we can dress up in alien costumes and drain the blood out of them. Then for a grand finish, we set fire to the entire area to both accurately simulate the destruction the Martians cause and to create large amounts of "Black Smoke".

*Curate Rolls Dice*

"4!? Damint!"

*Heat Rayed*

"Allright, it's a full scale war now!"

*allied Martian, Federation, Klingon and Romulan forces go all out to defend Earth*

"This is a peaceful planet with the right to defend itself!"

*A Tempest obliterates a Borg Cube*

Sorry, that just hopped into my fantasy.

Think I'm joking about burning down the British countryside? I'm an American, and we never did properly pay you Brits back for torching Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812. So sit back and watch the firestorm, and count yourself lucky that we're not going after London.

Actually, I think you managed to hit Ottawa during 1812, so we're even. You Sack/burn our (Canada, which was British at the time) capital, we sack/burn yours.
