Renowned Authors To Launch Science Fiction Hub

LIVERPOOL, UK – 4 April 2005: Critically acclaimed authors will visit the University of Liverpool next week to launch the world’s first website for science fiction research.

The University’s Sydney Jones Library holds the largest collection of science fiction books, periodicals and archives in Europe. Collections include fiction magazines, such as Amazing Stories, which featured H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds in 1932 and the original manuscript of John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids.

Ramsey Campbell, acclaimed author and President of the British Fantasy Society, will launch the ‘Science Fiction Hub,’ along with fellow award-winning writers, Brian Aldiss, best known for his work, Helliconia Trilogy, and Stephen Baxter, author of The Time Ships and Voyage.

The Science Fiction Hub is supported by funds from the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) and is based on the science fiction collections in the University’s Special Collections and Archives. It features the library of the Science Fiction Foundation as well as the archives of many of Britain’s most important science fiction writers, such as Eric Frank Russell and John Brunner.

Roy McCready, Science Fiction Hub Manager, explains: “The Hub will provide a great boost to research into science fiction and its many related subjects. Users will be able to access related research resources around the world, including databases, organisations, conferences and courses.”

The University Library holds the archives of distinguished writers such as Olaf Stapledon, known as Liverpool’s ‘cosmic philosopher.’ He was initially a Neo-Platonic scholar at the University but went on to become one of the most visionary and influential science fiction writers of all time. His most famous works, Last and First Men, Odd John and Star Maker, traced human evolution and the search for truth across two billion years. These novels are still regarded as some of the finest science fiction ever written.

The Science Fiction Hub can be found at http://www.sfhub.ac.uk/ and will be launched on
Tuesday, 12 April at the Sydney Jones Library.

Fact File – Science Fiction:
Science fiction can be traced back to stories of ‘imaginary voyage,’ such as Homer’s Odyssey. Greek writer Lucian of Samosata in the second century AD imagined a trip to the Moon in his True History.
Science fiction is ‘a literature of the fantastic’ or ‘the literature of what if?’
The term science fiction was first used in 1851 by William Wilson in his book A Little Earnest Book Upon A Great Old Subject. Hugo Gernsback reinvented the term as ‘scientifiction’ in 1926 in the first issue of Amazing Stories magazine. It was officially known as science fiction in 1929.
Science Fiction explores the nature of change and links literature and film to many other academic disciplines, such as Philosophy, Popular Culture and Utopian Studies.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the Science Fiction Hub launch. Please contact Samantha Martin on the number below if you wish to attend.

No problemo. Was meant to be discussing it and H.G.Wells in particular on RADIO 5 LIVE last night if Liverpool lost but we won and the show was completely dominated talk of the game. And boy oh boy what a game. For once I was happy not to discuss War of the Worlds. =D>
