| Post subject: | Who would you like to see make a Victorian movie version |
If they ever get round to making a version set in the book's Victorian setting. Who would you want to make it and play the Narrator? Steve Jackson would be topper-most of my list with Daniel Day Lewis in the leading role. Other obvious choices would be Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton and James Cameron. The former to would be a risk though as they often mess up but are visually stunning directors with a lot of style that would suit well to the Martian invasion in a Victorian setting. |

Good question. 
I think the BBC would make a good job of it, don't ask me who would be a suitable director for a BBC production because I don't know any. I agree with your choice of "James Cameron" for a film version. As for the lead role I've always imagined Robert Hardy as the Narrator, although he's probably too old for the part now. I'll have to think of the other characters, I'll get back to you on that. |

I almost think that Tim Burton would make it too 'Tim Burton-esque.' Stylish, to be sure, but might stray a bit from the actual feel of the original story in his quirkiness. Same with Gilliam, actually. Which isn't to say they shouldn't do it; after all, every interpretation has strayed from the original story, including the much-loved Hines version. (Sarcasm mode on for that last bit, by the way! Could you imagine the trouble that might cause, someone else doing a period-version adaptation of the story, and doing it better than the Hines version? Of course, I think that's pretty much what we've all wanted...) Now James Cameron's an interesting choice; he certainly has an eye for detail and the technical know-how. I just wonder if he'd actually be interested. As for casting, man I don't even want to go there at this point. I'll post some random ideas, though, if I think of any. |

How about Ridley Scott as director? we know his attention to detail is excellent and he has done both historical drama and Sci/Fi. I think I would be very worried if Tim Burton got the job, too weird.

If they ever do a decent Victorian-era version, it probably will be British-made. Don't know too many producers and directors from over the pond, so I won't mention any candidates. For the Narrator, though, Pierce Brosnan would be a good choice; either him or Hugh Grant. (Maybe have both in it as the Narrator and his brother in London.) If you're puzzled about having hunks in it, well, there's no real love story in the original story, so we've got to have something to bring the ladies into the theatre. (It's a war movie, albeit a highly unusual one, so that'll bring the men in even if they're not normally big on sci fi.) Or maybe Christian Bale or Gerald Butler. |
