The paintings in the booklett of the fighting machines aren't constent with what is described in the dialogue. So there is something that sprays the black smoke which isn't apparent on the FM's. also we don't even get an explanation of what the black smoke is or does on the album.

That's a good point. We only have small references to it (The songs Thunder Child and The Spirit Of Man, and the black dust is also referred in Dead London).

I heard the album before I read the book, by about a year and I thought the black smoke was just exaust fumes.

But the book said, that as soon as you breath it, you'll die! :a103:
So it's a deadly fume...

yes I know.

I'm just saying that when I first heard they album before reading the book that is waht I thought that the black smoke was emitions. When I read the book the balck smoke really spooked me out. Such a terrible death, and the way it travels down, into cellers and valleys is what makes it all the more scary.

Then where is that steam generator to get rid of the black smoke? In the Musical version is told about a Fighting Machine spraying steam to turn the Black Smoke into Black Dust.

I have always imagined the steam shooting out of the holes you can see on the lower front part of the FMs body.

I always imagined the steam shooting out from underneath but not those holes. I just thought the artists had neglected to include it in their designs. But it seems credible that those holes are where it comes from. I'd like to think tubes extend from them though. Which the steam then springs from. They could direct these steam better that way.

As for the Heatray the dialogue and the paintings seem a lttle at odds.

"Each carried a huge funnel..." this sounds like they are carrying it as they do in the books and not having it mounted. I know it still works, but It makes me wonder. Also the line. "It raised itself to full hight and flureshed the funnel high in the air..." sounds like it is holding the heat ray above itself.

I reckon that the funnel is moving its direction to seek out a specific target, that is then referred as flourished the funnel high in the air...

Sorry "oever532", but I have to agree with 'Loz' here. Michael Trim got it wrong. And although I still like Trim's design, I think Jeff should have gone with Roger & Martyn Deans designs, he had commissioned earlier.
The paintings are better the FMs are better and you can actualy see the Martians in the hood.

Everyone has his/her own taste, so I really don't care... Trim's design is my favorite.

Agreed. When I first got into the album. They were the definative Tripods for me. But then I started to see other artist renditions. And I read the book. I like to see FM's with lots of tenticals. and the musical ones just have that one protuding from the underside on the Thunder Child picture. Which looks a bit crappy compared to others. Also the Machines have to turn round to direct the heatray. Where as Tripods with the heatray at the end of a tentical can shoot in any direction in a flash. Also, none of the pictures of the Trim Tripods have a sense of motion. They are all stood static, and you get the feeling, which actually shows in the game that they are not very agile movers. They are rigid movers. I still have a lot of love for them. I love the hoods. Especially the Handling Machine hood, which is somehow spookier.
I'm looking forward to seeing them in action in the film though. I hope they will have more than one tentical. And I hope they change where the tenticals come from. At the moment the Tripods own legs will be in the way of the tentical having a full range of movements. They need to protude from above the legs.

Have you seen the new CGI of the Handling Machine? its walking....sort of.... It's not as impressive as the FMs walking. if you saw it coming after you, you may have to walk a little faster to get away from it

I've had a good look around and the only ones I can find are these very poor quality pictures. they do not do justic to the art work. I'll see if I can get any better ones.

I used to have a book of Roger and Martyn Dean's art work. And all of their WOTW pictures were in it. One had them in the Artic. Another showed a river clogged with red weed. Their was one of them coming out of the ocean.

Anyone ever see the old Japanese sci fi flick "The Mysterians"? The giant robots in that movie remind me of the beaked tripods in the "Thunder Child" picture above.
