One thing that always bugged me about the Fighting Machines in the booklet that came with the album, was the fact that none of the fighting machines appeard to have prehensile tenticals or indeed, even a portal for them to protude from.
We know that they have them, because the artillary man describes Men being picked up and bashed against trees.

I hope that Jeff will add this feature to his awsome titans in the CGI film.

Actually, if you take a closer look at the album cover by Michael Trim, the under carraige of the machine that houses the Heat Ray tube, you will see 3 ariels, 2 side ariels and 1 central ariel towards the back. Between the Heat Ray tube and the cental ariel you will see the tenticle protruding from the hatchway.

Yes I have seen that before and assumed it was a tentical. But it doesn't quite fit the bill does it?

Im hoping that Jeff incorporates that 'line' into the film. I mean, just how menacing would that look to see one of those beast's pick someone up and 'bash' across tree stumps - scary thought really.

Oh God yes, I love the fighting machines from the album art, they are like no others, and to think it was nearly the Dean ones. The clips in the PC game were great but the machines seemed rigid. It will be great to see Jeff's fighting Machines moving along at great speed with fluidity and vwrenching people on horse back and the such off the ground and bashing them into tress, splintering them. They also uproot trees in the book and smash things with them, and I'd like to see that too. I hope that they have several tenticals.
The fact that they don't even bother with the heatray on the common and just let rip with their prehensiles is horrifying.

If the tripods get made into robust action toys, I hope that they have sound. Obviously all the different sounding Ullas from the album, especially the one just before the end of side two and the dieing ones, and the more melodius one in the spirit of man section. Also some heatray sounds. and just to ice the cake so to speak, how about some of the classic sound track bits that help depict the Martians hammering and working, oh and the bass line when the cylander opens. This would be the best toy ever, even better than my silver remote controle Dalek.

You're all forgetting the tentacles' most important use, at least in the original novel. In Wells' book, the fighting machines used their tentacles to carry and fire the cannons (apparently as large in proportion to a fighting machine as a bazooka is to a man) that launched the canisters full of Black Smoke, and it was the poisonous smoke more than the Heat-Ray that finally routed British resistance on the ground.

I aint forgetting nothing tough guy. We have discussed the black smoke many times in other posts.

I don't remember reading that in the book, I'm pretty sure they didn't have bazookas in 1897 :? ......... :D

I didn't say it WAS a bazooka, just that from the description in Wells' book, it sounds more like one in appearance than anything else. A large, bulky, rocket-launcher: that's a bazooka in the modern world. Guess we can chalk up another sci fi prediction come true for old H.G.

Well, he was a man ahead of his time. I reckon he had a Time Machine, popped forward in time, about 50 years or so and bought a complete volume of encyclopedia and probably got the bookcase as an introductory offer
