Since you lucky Brits were able to view the revisioned
‘Battlestar Galactica’ long before us poor Canadian
saps, I’m wondering how it was received. Particularly
in terms of the cinematography, which (so it would seem
from the early CGI tests) is being applied to some of
the effects shots for the new WOTW.

(I am speaking, of course, about the ‘impossible zoom’
shots, where we’re viewing a panoramic star-scape around
the Galactica, and then – ZOOP! – the camera zooms
impossibly and we’re suddenly focused on the actions of
a very small ship some five miles away.)

As far as it goes with the CGI motion tests, I loved the
technique. Not only did it give the viewer the chance
to focus on different aspects of the Fighting Machine,
it seemed to add a real dynamism to the shot. It also
helped make it inherently re-watchable. We have to
remember that the vast majority of the audience won’t be
as juiced about seeing a Fighting Machine as some of us
will be (and I’ve watched that test footage probably 40
times at this point). A little cinematic dynamism can
go a long way.

My question is, how far should it go? I notice, on
‘Battlestar’, that they seem to apply similar camera
techniques to the dramatic character-driven scenes, and
it doesn’t quite work.

As far as modern sci-fi goes, what’s the consensus on
the ‘hyper camera’ methods, and does it even mean
anything that they used them in the CGI tests?
