Tyrian 2000 is a new version of Tyrian from the early nineties. The entire game is free downloadable on the following link:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~vannevar/t ... loads.html

You can also download the Ship Editor, where you can configure a ship with your desired weaponcombinations (Front, Rear and Sidekick, and you can configure it's type of shield, the type of generator and the ship's armour strength. You can even download a GBA version of the entire game!

No problem. The only minor point is by me: I can't get either music or sound effects on it (but that's on my computer). My personal DEATH weapon against my foes in the game is when I've my ship equipped with its armour bar full, the shield is MicroCorp HXS Class C, the Generator is Gravitron Pulse Wave, my Front Gun is the Laser, My Rear Gun is either the Heavy Guided Bombs or the Guided Micro Bombs, my Left Sidekick is the Protron Cannon Tangerine, and my Right Sidekick is the BattleShip Class FireBomb. Having a combination like that makes me nearly invincible! *begins laughing*

Getting back to the point of the article, both the US and Russia have been working on laser weapons ever since the 1950s. Already, we have laser communicators that deliver sizeable messages in instantaneous bursts of energy (even Yugoslavia developed one of these shortly before the country broke up in civil war), laser rangefinders and targeting devices for guns, and laser designators for smart bombs and artillery shells.

The first lasers to do damage on their own are blinding lasers, which temporarily or permanently blind eyes and sensors. All the major powers seem to have them. The Russians used lasers to blind Mujaheddin snipers in Afghanistan, the Chinese are selling their blinding lasers wholesale on the worldwide arms market, and there are rumors that you Brits used a warship-mounted blinding laser to bring down three Argentine aircraft during the Falklands War. A traditional "heat ray" type of laser weapon would be icing on the cake.

Time we get to work on systems that may be capable of shattering incoming asteroids (or at least alter their course to one in which they pass by Earth without hitting it).

who knows what secret weaponary the american army have cooked up. you have to asume that they have powerful weapons that we don't know about.

Once a really powerful laser beam is created they will want to keep it hidden for as long as possible.

Nothing will be more dangerous.

At their most powerful you could cut the moon in half just by standing in your own back garden and pointing it at the moon and moving it from one end to the other. You could point it to the horizon of our own world and then down across the ground and to the opposie horizon and cut the planet Earth in half.

Once lasers reach their full potential, this is what they will be capable of. Thats it, one in the wrong hands and its game over for us all.

Secret weapons? Cool. I hope they use them only in defense of the entire planet...

But what about when a time comes when anyone can get hold of a super laser and someone cuts the Earth or M :a103: oon in half?

Then we have big trouble. Remember the Star Trek thread by the Classic Sci-Fi forum? Where I talked about the ST serial Enterprise, and the episode Twilight? I found on a site pics of what happened to Earth when the Xindi Superweapon (a laser-like affair) was fired on her... :-({|=

What happened to Earth?

In the alternate timeline of that episode, and the episode period is October 2154 - an alternate 2165, Johnathan Archer was infected by parasites which disabled his long-time memories. The Xindi realized the Enterprise was hunting on their superweapon, so they already had launched it. The result: The Earth, along with Mars, the Alpha Centauri and Vega colonies were totally annihilated, since the Xindi's goal was to wipe out Humanity, a task given by them by the Sphere Builders. Less than 6,000 humans survived this onslaught and were relocated to Ceti Alpha V. In the end of the episode, Archer managed to create a subspace implosion, which didn't only destroy the Enterprise, but it erased also the parasiter in Archer's head. The consequence is that everything was dashed back in time, and Archer and his crew managed to prevent the Earth from being destroyed in the original timeline.

Sounds like a classic. Was Earth and Mars completely obliterated, as in blown to space dust, or were they just sterilized?

They were completely obliterated. I'm considering to post 4 images of the moment Earth was annihilated. :a010:
