Interesting analogy, Demod. Ever read Wells' short story "The Empire of the Ants"? (Note: This is NOTHING like the cheesy movie of the same title that came out a couple decades ago.) In it, a species of intelligent ants appears in the Amazon rainforest and starts killing the human population or driving them out, using poisoned spears. The narrator is on a Brazilian Navy gunboat sent to deal with the situation.

Its a 70's science fiction film that is incredibly well shot. Ants are given a higher inteligence than us when there is a conjunction of the planets. a team of scientists are sent to an area to study them, as they have created tall towers with geometric designs. But the ants end up studying them. Real ants are used. Track it down its just wonderful.
There is a bit where a poison is sprayed all over an army of them as they attack the base. They all die and the poison crystalises into yellow substance. A single and comes and grabs a bit of it in its mandibles and walks away. It only gets a little way and dies, another ant comes and takes the crystal from its mouth and walks further and dies. this keeps happening, until one gets it to the queen, deep in the nest. She eats it. The camera moves from her head eating the poison across her huge bloated egg filled body. She is laying white eggs one after the other. After a few moments the eggs come out yellow. The ants born from the yellow egggs are imune to the poison. It is a truely great film.

I remember it well, some great photography, Do you remember the Ant's mortuary scene?, thousands of dead ants all in neat rows, it must of taken ages, but well worth it. =D>

On the "Broken Gun" problem, the possible explinations are:

A) The Martians could only launch the attacks while within a certain distance of Earth, most likley becaues the cylinder only carried enough supplies to last over that period of time. (When the 'Rations' are mentioned later in the book, it is said that they were all consumed during the trip.)

B) The Martians had only planned to Launch the Ten cylinders at that time.
Quite likley because they were low on resources and couldn't afford a truly massive fource, so they used the bare minimum that they could scrap together and hoped it was enough.

C) The Cannnon realy was Broken, and thr part they needed was only sold at the one store, and they sold out and didn't get a fresh shipment until next Thursday but then the ttipod was delayed on the way to the store because of an accident on the highway....

Yes great scene that. The bit where two different collonies are fighting and suddenly stop is great two, and the bit where the big spider gets broken down into little bits and carried off was also very striking.

Could be any, I think B) is most likely. Ten Cylanders containing five Martains each. That's fifty Fighting Machines. Some of The Martian's were pregnant as well, so there numbers would increase. Fifty Tripods could conquer any resistence once they understood that resitence. We hear of one flying machine in the book but they would likely make many and their invasion could speed up then. But for the first part they spend a few weeks securing London and its perimiters and building thec Martian base. Once the base was completed they could use our resources to create more and more machines of distructoin. Things they could not bring with them from Mars due to the points you rise in B)

Good job they didn't bring any Penecilin.

D) The 'Red Planet' is home to the 'Red-Necks' of a larger alien society.

No, since our planet has the requirements to maintain a decent biosphere and capable of sustaining life (noting to what the Martians say in the Martian opening sequence of the game), the simply want our planet to live there. And since we humans are 'in the way', they simply want the planet to be theirs instead of ours.
