Special thanks to 'Dassy' over on www.thewaroftheworlds.com for this!
Here are the details of the Pal movie Special Edition from Paramount Home Entertainment due out November!
Image
''The classic 1953 George Pal-directed film adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel arrives on November 1st with a new fullscreen transfer and a Dolby Digital Mono track. New extras for this set will include an audio commentary with stars Gene Barry and Ann Robinson and a second commentary with director Joe Dante, film historian Bob Burns and Bill Warren, author of "Keep Watching the Skies!". Other extras include "The Sky is Falling: The Making of War of the Worlds" and "H.G. Wells: The Father of Science Fiction" featurettes, the original trailer and the complete Mercury Theater on the Air radio broadcast that panicked the nation in October 1938!''

The only thing I find odd is the MONO soundtrack. This has been released on VHS with a stereo mix so why the mono now?
Anyway..looks cool!

Thanks for that, Evilnerfherder. I wonder if I can buy that, though, since I already have the VHS tape AND the first DVD...

Ah, shoot a Heat-Ray to that, I'm gonna add it to my collection anyway...

Maybe the Mono mix is so you are getting the actual origional film as it was intended.

Maybe so... it obviously had something to do with the fact that stereo wasn't invented yet... :-s :-k

Yeah. Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is in Mono. If you buy it now it is still in Mono. You can get a stereo mix in a box set. But It was origionally mixed in Mono and that is the way Brian Wilson wants us to hear it.

Some things can be good in both mono and stereo...

Very true.

I like stereo so you hear different sounds from different boxes. But I like mono more in the case of one of the soundboxes becoming inoperative... :a037:

Yes there are plenty of albums that don't sound so good when one of the speakers is on the blink!

Yes I have the same problem with my old HiFi, I found if you give the speakers a little burst of volume it's OK till next time you turn it on.
I was told it's a common prblem called a 'Dry Solder Joint' or something like that. :-s

you know the BBC have released old Doctor Who episodes on DVD with an option to watch them with new CGI effects, that would have been awesome for this.

The new effects are only tiny bits here and there. The Ark in Space for example has a new CGI space station replacing the old one and that's about it. Still has the same big plastic Wyrm.

I don't like to see old films and TV programs messed with. Nothing needs changing in the 53 version. It is a masterpeice, a work of art, strings and all.

The Special Editions of Star Wars don't do it for me.

I loved the first big battle scene in the 1953 movie...
