I enjoyed the 1953 movie alot as a kid and recently got it on DVD. Yes I can see the strings now but as a kid I don't remember seeing them. The effects in that film where probably the best I had ever seen. After seeing the Pendragon CGI in the trailers I still think the effects in the 1953 film are better.

The 'flying wing' quoted by willowell is pretty good information and would of course become the inspiration for the B-2 Stealth Bomber. I'm sure they used the 'flying wing' just as American Cold War propaganda until 'Skunk Works' came along.

Well I'd say the Pal effects were much better.

Christ yes, vastly.

The effects in Things to Come of 1936 are infinitely superior.

As are those of Metropolis (1926).

I think you need to go back to around 1910 before they become comparable.

You know it makes sense!

Actually, some years ago I saw the UK premiere at the NFT of 'In Nacht und Eis', a German film about the Titanic disaster made in August 1912 (yes, 4 months after the event! It was never shown here at the time for some reason).

They used a big toy boat for the Titanic, and even that looked better than the Thunder Child in Timbo's film, as can be seen in this still:

And if we're on the subject of old-time vfx, look at these stills from 'Deluge', a 1933 disaster flick about New York being destroyed by an earthquake and tidal waves (there's a fab behind the scenes shot too):

Now that's what I call special effects!

Is that film still in print?

I'd love to see it.

Thanks for the pictures. =D>

No problem!

I spent years looking for 'Deluge' and only recently found it (excerpts of the disaster footage were bought by Republic in the 1940s and used in some of their serials, e.g. 1949's 'King of the Rocket Men', which is the only time I've seen anything from 'Deluge').

Eventually I found out that 'Deluge' had been lost for years, and the only print that finally turned up was an Italian-dubbed version 30 minutes shorter!

However, as all the action occurs (unlike most disaster flicks) in the first couple of reels, and the rest is a tedious post-disaster romantic melodrama, the disaster sequences are, apparently, intact. This print is only available on VHS tape (and only in the US, NTSC, format).

I've got a link to a site that sells it but I'm at work and it's at home! I've yet to order it, actually...

EDIT: Here's that link to what is probably the best site for it (well, cheapest anyway if you want a new, rather than second-hand, copy):

well i think as it turned out, Pendragons special effects are in fact 53's bitch.

the new debate is Pendragon WOTW Vs Attack of the Killer Tomatoes for the title of worst film of all time.

Plan 9 had Bella Lagosi. (I'm bound to have spelt that wrong) Well for half the movie. Its quite a laugh to watch. You get something from it. Pendragons WOTW gives you psycological problems

Did you have those, Loz? Or did you run away from the Pendragon version as soon as it started?

Author:  Loz [ Mon Aug 01, 2005 12:06 pm ]
Post subject:

No, I got Psychological problems from sitting through it. I'm seeing a Psychologist over it. I keep seeing the Martians draining that cow thing in my mind. Yaaaaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :alien2:

*goes to toilet* I can't stand watching people being drained. It's worse than seeing Cell in the anime Dragonball Z absorbing an innocent citizen!

but this was an inocent cow thing. That looked like it had been stuffed and sold in a Spanish souvenier shop! :?
