... little article I found on http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/enter...es/10808605.htm

John J. Pearrow’s favorite film is “War of the Worlds, because it made him tremble in delicious terror at the Matanzas Theatre in St. Augustine, Fla., in 1953. But to understand how he got there, you have to start with his Uncle Nick.

“When I was a boy, I idolized my Uncle Nick, says Pearrow, 61, of Columbia. “To me, he was the smartest person in the world, and I used to spend many hours with him reading and listening to his stories. When I was 6, he told me how the United States was scared silly by the Orson Welles radio broadcast of the H.G. Wells novel ‘War of the Worlds.’

“I could not understand how anyone could become frightened listening to a radio show, so I vowed to read the novel the first chance I had. The chance came when I was 9 and got my first library card. The novel was a bit difficult for me, but I managed to get through it and I became a science-fiction fan from that point on. (And) when Classics Illustrated published ‘War of the Worlds’ (as a comic book), I purchased a copy and it quickly became my favorite.

“(The film version) scared the living daylights out of me. I can remember not wanting to go to bed that night. I was convinced that one of the fireballs carrying the Martian death machines would come streaking through the sky at any minute.

“I have a videotape and a DVD of the movie. I watch that movie five or six times a year and enjoy it every time. As I watch the Martian heat rays hit the buildings in Los Angeles, I can remember pressing myself as deeply as possible into the seats of the theater, wanting the movie to be over and at the same time hoping it would never end.
