Actually this was a stinker.

Maxamillian and the two little robots were good, but the film was crap.

There's talk of a remake of this 'classic' film. I first thought, 'Why this film?', but then realised that it might be a good candidate for a remake: everything that was a bit lame or wrong (breathing in space, without spacesuits) could be made better, and certainly the SFX should be amazing. (Not that the original didn't have good SFX; for its day, it was quite good from a visual standpoint, especially given the 'old school' approach that they had to use back then!) More important, the plot/story could be made to be less schizophrenic. (Just what was the original, anyway? A serious adult sf adventure? A kids' action film? An allegory about hubris, and/or about good versus evil? An attempt to cash in on the post Star Wars sf boom? All of the above?)

Anyway, a remake of this can't be any worse than the original, right? [-o<

Well if they could remake it without it being so cheesy that would be a start.

Maybe they could concentrate less on making a remake and more on making something new & original.

(Wait for it...)

Oh, sorry. I figured it was worth a shot to try to say that with a straight face! I actually do wish for originality, but we are talking Hollywood, so I know better.

Still, I agree about making the remake less cheesy. Try not to have the 'cute robot' stuff, or at least tone down the 'cute' factor of them. Have security 'bots that actually are menacing, not just because of sheer numbers, but because they are actually capable security 'bots. Try to have consistent space effects that have some basis in reality, like, oh I don't know, maybe not being able to breathe in space, or not having flaming meteors in space. Or try having consistent effects if the ship gets holed, as opposed to one section explosively decompressing, and another not. And maybe avoid the tacked-on 'heaven/hell' thing, or Dante's inferno, or whatever it was supposed to be.

Oh, well. I guess we'll see soon enough...

By the way, as impractical a design as the origin al film's Cygnus was, I still think it looked cool. Must have made a 'right image at the right time' impression on me. Still, I wouldn't mind it they changed it to be more 'realistic' based upon what we understand about space travel. It could still be big, and have a lot of supporting framework on the outside to evoke the original roots of the design, but I think a more practical crew section (as opposed to a huge & mostly empty pressurised hull) would be nice. I suspect, though, that such an improvement might end up looking more like the ships from Silent Running as a result... Nice design, those, but out of place for this remake.
