I was already bored with
Star Trek when I first heard they were making yet another film, but now the more I hear about & see stills from the new one, the more I want to run away screaming "I never liked
Star Trek... I mean I never
heard of it! What are you talking about?"
Anyway, it's effectively a reboot of the franchise. Supposed to be young Kirk & crew on their first mission aboard the
Enterprise.
YAWN.
Apparently, there's a time-travel thing going on. YAWN AGAIN.
The time travel re-writes the timeline so that now, what we see is the official new timeline, or some such... It completely ignores established continuity by rewriting it. So why not just make up a brand new series? Why try to make this thing look like
ST, but different?
ST fans have either been going orgasmic over this new 'old' film, or hate it. Both sides have yet to actually see it, of course. Oh, I admit that I fall into the 'hate it' camp, if that isn't obvious. And like I said, I'm rather bored with
ST anyway, so my disdain for the new film is more because I think that the
whole franchise should give it a rest already. It doesn't need
revitalisation, it needs to
take a long break.
Anyway, the film...
Looks like a cross between
Top Gun (I'm the only American I know who still detests that film. Never liked it, likely never will.) and
Star Trek, with a bit of the latest popular young adult TV drama cast with young, beautiful people. I use
Beverly Hills 90210, since that's the show that started that whole craze on this side of the pond. In short, I call the new 'old'
ST film
Top Gun Trek 90210.
I know, I know, don't judge it before I've seen it. I would say the same to those who think it's great without having seen it. (No offence intended to anyone here, by the way! I'm just pointing out that the 'don't judge' sentiment works both ways.) I admit that SFX-wise, it looks cool, but to me, that's not all that special. And sure, it looks action-y, but to me that just makes it feel like a marketing gimmick to sell the eventual video game version. Sorry for this long rant;
I doubt it's been helpful.
Maybe I should just suggest looking up info at startrek.com or some other site.
Oh, but don't look at what they did to the
Enterprise.
Don't say I didn't warn you...
