Warner Bros. will release "Superman Returns" on Wednesday, June 28, two days before previously scheduled, in an attempt to boost ticket sales over the U.S. Independence Day holiday weekend, the studio announced Thursday.
This will allow the movie to be out a full seven days before the holiday, following a trend in recent years for studios to release films on the Wednesday before holiday weekends to take advantage of advance hype and fill theater seats during the week.
Last year, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks opened "War of the Worlds" on the Wednesday before Independence day, bringing in $112.7 million over the six days, and when Sony released "Spider-Man 2" early in 2004 over the same holiday weekend it brought in $180 million in a six-day release.
With the new Superman film, Warner Bros. is trying to bring back an old franchise. The last time a Superman movie was made was 1987, with "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace."
