Hello. I'm new to the site. I've enjoyed "The War of the Worlds" in all it's versions but esspecially H G Wells' original novel. I just want to ask what is it that attracted you to the book, anything about it that's stood out and why you keep coming back to it.

Here are my reasons. First it's realistic, near documentary approach and Wells' pared down writing which still has room for some visual and poetic touches: the sunset just before he Martians release their Black Smoke and the phrase: "The moon had the sky to herself..." as examples. The second is that it is a forecast of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries which some Victorians were in trepidation of and with good reason. "WOTW" forecasts total warfare, mechanised warfare, civilians caught up in the frontline of fighting, huge populations being displaced, chemical warfare and most chilling of all, ethnic cleansing. (The Martians not only want to drink us but also enslave and exterminate an inferior race).

Its finally also a good read.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks.

Hi 'morrisvan' and welcome to the forum :D

When I was a kid I had seen Sci/Fi films at the cinema and on the TV but they were always set in the future and usually in space or on strange planets, then my brother bought Jeff Wayne's musical version of WOTWs and I was blown away  It had never occurred to me that Victorian England could come under threat. That's the great thing about Wells, all the great Sci/Fi ideas were done by him first, Time-travel, Invisibility, Earth Invasion, Genetic manipulation and many more, he was simply a great author with a great imagination.
I am also a big fan of the original novel.
