Lauren Bacall has attacked Tom Cruise as 'shocking, vulgar and sick' for exploiting his private life to sell his movies.

The 81-year-old Hollywood legend also poured scorn on his acting abilities.

Miss Bacall spoke of her distaste at Cruise's publicising of his relationship with fiancèe Katie Holmes, which conveniently coincided with the launch of his latest film War Of The Worlds.

' His whole behaviour is so shocking,' she told Time magazine.

'It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially. I think it's kind of a sickness.'

Miss Bacall, who was married to Humphrey Bogart and appeared with him in several films, added insult to injury by saying 42-year-old Cruise was not much of an actor.

'When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise,' she said.

Asked 'So you don't think Tom Cruise is a great actor?', she confirmed: 'No, I don't.'

As far as Cruise's gushing over his engagement to 26-year-old Miss Holmes goes, Miss Bacall simply seems to be saying what everyone else is thinking.

The actor, who remained fiercely private throughout his 11-year marriage to Nicole Kidman, has been ridiculed for the energetic way in which he has used his relationship with Miss Holmes to win coverage for War Of The Worlds.

Miss Holmes has also been publicising her first proper movie role, in Batman Begins.

Cruise's sudden enthusiasm for emotionally baring all about a woman he hardly knows and is 16 years his junior has left plenty wondering if the relationship is all it appears to be.

They have put on wild displays of affection at their movie premieres, and the press were tipped off before he proposed to her at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Miss Bacall, whose films include To Have And Have Not, The Big Sleep and Key Largo, also had some sage words for Miss Holmes, previously only known for U.S. teenage drama Dawson's Creek.

'All right, so you start off when you're a kid, and you make an impression,' she said. 'You can't always be a leading lady. You can't always be a glamour-puss. It all changes, thank God.

'When everything happens to you when you're so young, you're very lucky, but by the same token, you're never going to have that same feeling again.

' The first time anything happens to you - your first love, your first success - the second one is never the same.'

Miss Bacall's comments come a little under a year after she criticised Cruise's ex-wife Miss Kidman, 38, for being a 'beginner'.

Asked what it felt like to co-star with 'movie legend' Miss Kidman in the film Birth, Miss Bacall was quick to object.

She said: 'She's not a legend. She's a beginner. What is this "legend"? She can't be a legend at whatever age she is.'
