Some designs are absolutely awful aren't they. You think what a sh*t artist, what was he/she thinking. Some have the tripods way to big with what look like cities in the hood section.
They can be just so wrong you think, have they even read the book!

The only Tripods I draw are the Jeff Wayne FM's, and the Machines from the 1953 movie.

I think the new machines in the new Parramount are by far better than either the two you mention.

I know, but the two I mentioned I simply can draw them in almost every detail. Even today I'm still drawing them on occasion.

I used to draw them all the time too but then I started to draw my own designs with a martian always visable driving it in the hood.

I hope it has a decent shield active, otherwise the Martian would be an easy target to bombard.

Well as you know the Martians didn't have sheilds, other than the one they used when crossing from one pit to another. If they are hit by shells then they die, that's why they don't let themselves come into range after this happens and use the black smoke.

That's true. Preventing is better than curing, as we say it in the Netherlands.

It does have characteristics of fish...

A cuttlefish is a mollusc, like a squid with a shell.

You don't suppose the tripod designer was a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, do you? Almost every one of the horrors he created for his Cthulhu Mythos was based on one or more marine animals, largely because he was allergic to seafood. Or maybe the tripod designer is allergic to seafood and used the cuttlefish design on his own, without any posthumous help from Lovecraft.

Insects and marine animals are so alien looking, compared to mammals, birds or even reptiles that artists and designers often use them as a starting ground for creating their extra terrestrials.

he martians were locust like in Quatermass and the pit. Admiral Akkabar from Jedi looks like a lobster.

Obvoiusly your less imaginative artists or less imaginative production teams, force artists to make the aliens humanoid in appearence, Star Trek is full of humonoid creatures that look almost the same as us, but have a ridge on their foreheads or a blue or whatever.

Then again we are talking about the machines here and not the aliens, who three legs or no, looked pretty human.

Star Trek races are indeed humanoid in the majority. It seems we humans are easily distinctive of them because we don't have ridges like the Klingons, or have pointed ears like the Vulcans & Romulans. Phisically we humans are stronger, since we're able to survive with one lung or kidney, and we can go for days without water and weeks without food, since our bodies have the ability to conserve water and live off stored fat respectively. And the efficient temperature regulation of our bodies allows us to survive temperatures colder than, for example, the Cardassians could bare, and we can survive temperatures hotter than the degree at which the Andorians would feel uncomfortable.

Spot on 'Loz' My FM's body was designed on that of a 'Flea' with the hood slung underneath to give it a sinister hunchback appearance

And the Martians themselves have similarities with Earth squids/octopuses.

Hi new poster here. When I saw the Tripods they reminded me of the ID4 aliens which led me to assume Nick Tatopolis did the concept art for them. I can see the resemblance to the 53 design, the same of the crests matchs the swan design from that film.

A lot of resemblances here, don't you think?

Author:  Lonesome Crow [ Wed Aug 24, 2005 6:31 pm ]
Post subject:

Yes the actual aliens are very similar to the ID4 aliens without their suits.

Right, they did had the same shape.
