Alien-invasion thriller "War of the Worlds" held on to first position ahead of winged competitor "Batman Begins" and newcomer "The Descent" in box office sales.
"War of the Worlds", starring Tom Cruise as ordinary man Ray Ferrier battling Martian tripod machines to save his family, has taken 17.6 million pounds after two weeks in cinemas, said Screen International on Tuesday.
Psychological horror film "The Descent" was the highest new entry at number three, a story that follows a group of all-female cavers who fall victim to monstrous underground predators.
"Batman Begins", starring Welsh-born Christian Bale, held on to second place, while Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in "Mr and Mrs Smith" fall one to number four.
Sci-fi film "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" moved down one place to fifth and romantic comedy "A Lot Like Love" dropped to sixth place.
Indian action thriller "Dus", directed by Anubhav Sinha, was a new entry at number seven, joining a very different kind of Indian film in the chart - "Paheli". The romantic folk tale from Rajasthan was down two places this week to tenth.
Action comedy "Kung-Fu Hustle" fell two places to eighth and ultra-violent comic strip thriller "Sin City" also moved down two places to ninth.
