Sci-fi thriller War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, was the highest earning global film last weekend, with takings exceeding $200m (£114m).
Steven Spielberg's blockbuster took $113.3m (£64.4m) in North America and $102.5m (£58.3m) elsewhere between Wednesday and Sunday.
The latter figure includes $15.7m (£8.9m) in the UK, $15.1m (£8.6m) in Japan and $7.8m (£4.4m) in Spain.
In both Russia and Taiwan it broke the record for best foreign film opening.
With a reported budget of $135m (£77m), War of the Worlds fell short of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith but easily outperformed other recent blockbusters like Batman Begins and Kingdom of Heaven.
According to the Screen Daily website, the picture is currently showing in 78 countries.
Critics had speculated that Cruise's recent off-screen activities - including his high-profile engagement to actress Katie Holmes - might affect his film's performance.
However, Paramount vice-chairman Rob Freidman said they are "totally separate issues" and that Cruise had supported the movie "in full force".
Paramount co-produced War of the Worlds with Spielberg's Dreamworks studio.
