Okay, just been to see it and overall I was very moved, entertained and thrilled by this movie. I loved all the Fighting Machinens presence, the panic, fear and futility of the humans. The boat scene was awsome. The burning train was incredibly Poignant. Ray's initial shock and forced responsibility was moving. Ogilvey scene was great apart from a point I#ll raise in a mo. Plane crash was incredible. The bit where Ray sees the red weed near and far is beautiful and very thought provoking.

What I didn't like was the aliens themselves, when they ventured into the basement. They were poorly designed in my opinion. Nothing like their discription in the book. If you don't know the book description then look know further than my avatar. I would have like to have seen the clash with the army against the tripods, but it still worked the way it was done, I'd just liiked to have seen it.
The invasion was to short. It takes a lot longer in the book for the Martians to get sick. The red weed dies off long before they do.
There should have been no army units left at the end, all dead or scattered, man on the run, everyman for himself, when the aliens start to die. So the bit where the soldiers take down the FM when it is already about to die was a bit corny for me.

But I really enjoyed it all the same and will do again. There where some great homages to the Pal version and the book.

Not a case of winning or losing Loz, I just wanted to know whether they had the small walkers we saw in that other thread.

Spoiler warning ..........

Their workers were actually just the Fighting Machines with special tenticles that pick up people and plant red weed. Near the back side of the Fighting machines are little cages they put people in.

They don't have small walker Lonesome. Just the big Tripods. What you see coming past the window is the same as what you see coming past the window of the 53 film. If yer know what I mean like.

...WTF?!

I'm pretty sure they have a smaller walker. You can see a pair of them in the basement scene.

*SPOILERS*

Ray removes a blocked window and sees a squat but still huge machine roaming next to the house. It's got the Tripods body, but below that, is nothing but hundreds of little tentacles feeling and prodding the ground.

*END OF SPOILER*

So...ya...I'm pretty sure that was a seperate machine...it didn't look like a tripod...nor did it move like one...it sort of floated along...

I thought the aliens were crap too.

On another note. I was asked to fill in a survey for Paramount (one of four cinemas in the USA). They asked what got me most excited to see it and then listed "Internet Trailer, TV trailer, E-entertainment tonight spot etc" and "Other". In the "Other" section I put "Eveofthewar.co.uk"

He he...maybe they will come have a look?

As my other post in another thread...

I just been and seen it with my gf!

Was great to finally see it :alien:

I will write a review next week. In summary, I don't think it's a Spielberg classic that people will talk about for years, but the movie is great and I can't wait to watch it again on DVD! A real rollercoaster of an action movie and the tripods..... WOW!

But I thought the creatures were just .... TOO CUTE! Needed to be more alien and horrible manky things!!! 8-[

No just saw it again and those are tripods, they can get themselves very low to the ground and those little arms messing with the ground are on them all the way through. In fact the one that comes up out of the water uses them to tip the boat up.

You see them a lot during the movie.

Agreed, the only ones I saw, were the Fighting machines. I was looking out for, and hoping to see different types, but only saw FMs.

That's logical, since the Fighting Machines are more commonly described in the book than either the Handling or the Flying Machine together. The 1938 radioplay and the 1953 movie also had Fighting Machines only, so this version is not the only one...

Apart from the fact there have been other invasion of the Earth films, icluding Pal's War of the Worlds, ID4 and WOTW are very different. The only similarity is that aliens invade planet with superiour tech.

I hope you pointed out that the original story was written over a 100 years ago and that ID4 is a poor copy of that, or was he too drunk to listen to reason by then?

I agree about the aliens being lackluster. I think I thought it was a handling machine too because in the trailer it looked like we were viewing a window to the outdoors, instead of within the cellar.

Post subject:

Yeah that's what got me. I thought it was a window to outside and it was night. My imagination did the rest. And the perspective of looking up at them exagerated in my memory.

Though I do agree with a few of the comments here.

It can be hard to tell with the poor quality internet pictures and the scenes only last half a second or so.

Also I didn't expect them to be so agile. So phsical. Well's Martian's are all brain and rely on their machines as bodies and muscle, the handling machine being a good example of this. Pals Martians are "Intelectual Giants" but "Physically Inferior." but these Tripedular doods look as though they kick ass. The way they climb out of the ruin shows them to be strong. This and the humonoid face is what spoiled them the most. why have 3 arms and 3 legs but two eyes two nostrils and one mouth all posistioned as ours are.

I think the Pal alien was cooler than these new ones. It was so alien and original (Especially for it's time) that I could forgive it's lack of faithfulness to the book.

Totally agree with that. I love the Pal alien. It is so very weird. It has two brains. Far out.
