Ok, so, we see the first tripod rise out of the ground and it whips out some lovely little beams of death. They can instantly reduce people to dust, without even touching their clothes, and at first seems to 'smash' any inorganic object it attacks. Later on in the movie, the same beams now seem to set fire to things from time to time, but not always.

If this is supposed to be some sort of souped-up Heat Ray, flash-cremating people where they stand, why wouldn't the heat be enough to burn their clothing or leave little singed spots on the ground? Why didn't it scorch and burn buildings instead of bursting through them?

Is this thing even a Heat Ray at all?

Like people suggested on the other Eve of the war forums, it might be a form of "Microwave Ray" Torch flesh but not clothes, that sort of thing, also there's more than one weapon at the Tripods disposal...Atleast...I'm pretty sure there is...

Its obviously not a heat ray. Speilberg has never mentioned using a heat ray. Its obviously something that just disintergrates organic material. And they have another ray that emits some kind of sonic force that can demolish matter.

But they're both the same weapon, fired from the same port at the same time!

And why didn't they use a Heat Ray? It could have been quite the show to see everything fine and then *Woosh* an inferno.

Creative license. They changed a lot more than that didn't they?

Maybe Speilberg wanted to avoid fire because it featured so much in ID4

They are aliens with completely different and ridiculously advance technology. There is no reason they can't have created a weopon that has several modes and therefor can fire several different types of energy from the same barrel.

Judge Dredds gun fires 6 or 7 different types of bullet from the same barrel. And has all those different bullets loaded at the same time. So stop bangong your head against the wall it hurts.

Considering that you can see the beam travling through the air I always assumed it was some sort of particle beam (With mass) as opposed to straight light waves. I agree the beam is inconsstant some times it just vaporized people other times it had the mass of a huge water cannon nocking building down. I just chalk it up to differen't emitter settings the Aliens choose to use. Of course the beams don't look any differen't to back up my consistancy dodge though.

I got the impression it was a kinetic energy weapon, which does disintegrate people, however if you look at the clothes of people it does scorch them slightly and it not all the clothing left just fragments.

I heard someone mention this on another forum..

Ay :-k

I did think of it as a new weapon at first, just a disintegrator/Kinetic beam of some sort, but I started hearing people talk about it as though they though it was still a heat ray, and that the 'dusted' people were being burnt so quickly that instantly became piles of ash. And early on, we see a few trees burst into flames, and a lot scorched military vehicles scattered arround later on.

Don't strain your brains trying to defend it, guys. Just say what really happened: Spielburg screwed up.
