Post subject:  Academy tightens Oscar rules

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is to tighten the rules for validating producer credits, further restricting the recipients of the best picture Oscar in time for the 2005 race. Previously, the Academy only questioned the credentials of films where more than four names were submitted as producer. Now any films with multiple production credits will be vetted to try and establish which film-makers contributed substantially to the film.

The Actors' union, Screen Actors Guild (Sag), has rejected a deal with the video games industry which would have given its members a 36% pay rise. The three-year contract has already been approved by the smaller American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (Aftra), however, which many voice-over artists are members of. The video game industry is estimated to be worth £5.5bn per year and Sag may hold out for a share of profits from overall sales.

Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the great HG Wells science fiction novel The War of the Worlds has run into trouble in Germany, where critics are upset at being barred from viewing and reviewing the film prior to its release. The country's leading film critics association launched an official protest against Paramount yesterday and many newspapers are set to run articles condemning the move in place of reviews. "We know this is common in the US, but it has never happened here in Germany before, and we won't stand for it," said Andrea Dittgen, head of the German critics association.
