FROM : <a href='http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/story/0,1259,---24649,00.html' target='_blank'>zap2it.com</a><br /><br />LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Steven Spielberg doesn't want his upcoming sci-fi flick "War of the Worlds" compared to producer George Pal's 1953 film version, which he refers to as "corny." <br />"In no way is this movie trying to be a remake of the '50s movie," says the film's producer Kathleen Kennedy in an interview with Zap2it.com and other media outlets on Thursday, Feb. 10. "It really is much more inspired by the H.G. Wells [book]." <br /><br />Spielberg confirms this take on his film, pointing out that even online fans have speculated that his aliens will move about in the same mechanical tripods that are described in the novel. <br /><br /><br />

That sounds encouraging.<br /><br />I can see why he whants to change the ending as well. We all know how the book ends, everyone does. He has to leave you guessing. or there's no point making the film.

as i went at some length to poin out before the board got frazzled the 53 version is a pretty good adaptation, and at least with me if Speilberg says hes going to be better than it and from what he says by quite some way, hes got a lot to do in my book.

I don't think Spielberg could do any worse than the 53 version, Wrong country, wrong time period, characters and situations changed. At least Spielberg has got tripods and red weed and something resembleing a Thunder Child scene.<br /><br />

its not all about making a list of book events that are in or not. the 53 version had plenty of well adapted sequences. I have no problem with the relocation of the story, if youre going to make a modern day story America makes sense. In 1898 the navy was the strongest weapon Britain had and in the Thunder Child sequence Wells shows a navy warship defeated heralding in the Martian control of Britain. In 1953 the strongest weapon America had was the atomic bomb and in the 53 film it fails to destroy the invaders ending the organised resistance against them (after that there is just retreat from them) Likewise in 1898 the Black Smoke was a superb piece of weaponry to use in science fiction as biological warfare had never been used in conflict at that point so it was a terrifying weapon that gave the Martians the decisive edge (it was the reason, you will recall, that the Martians were able to take London without casualties from the human artillary) By the time of the 53 version biological warfare was well known, so instead you have the sheilds of the fighting machines. The 53 version is a lot more faithful to the story than it appears at face value. Speilberg should be very careful about treating it as an easy target, lest he fall short of it.

Many good points there, Leper. I don't Spielberg & Kennedy's comments were really critical of the Pal version. In a couple other interviews Spielberg has spoke quite glowingly of it, so I'm not sure where that thing about him calling it corny came from. I'd like to see the full context that supposed quote came from. I think they're just saying that this version is giong to retain more elements and events of the book than Pal did and that this is a new adaptation of the book, not a remake of Pal's film.

As a fan of the 53 movie I'm glad they aren't remaking it because other wise there would be little point in making another WOTW's movie. I can't wait to see what Speilberg and Cruises take will be on the story.

well yes quite its been my argument all along thar Paramounts film may be a very good alien invaison film but whether it will even do enough to qualify as the story of War Of The Worlds is in question and until that question it resolved, everyone involved with it should not take it as manifest that they have instantly surpassed the 53 film.
