“War of the Worlds.” The 1953 Oscar-winning (special effects) version is one of my favorite science fiction allegories. Set in the 1950s (H.G. Wells’ book was set in the late 1890s), director Byron Haskin did not stray far from Wells’ story of human vulnerability, societal collapse and rescue by divine intervention.

Gene Barry and Anne Robinson in the lead roles escape the Martians’ extraordinary fighting machines in chilling scenes that retain all the cinematic impact they had when the film was in theaters a half century ago.

Steven Spielberg’s 2005 “War of the Worlds” brings the story into the 21st century, but incorporates Wells’ themes into a heart-stopping thriller that follows a young father (Tom Cruise) in his desperate attempt to save his family from the fearsome onslaught of very nasty aliens and their killing machines. Wells would recognize Spielberg’s towering alien tripods and heat ray, which the movie maker fashioned from the author’s descriptions. Good movie.

Another “War of the Worlds” was released in 2005, but no one noticed. Good thing, because it’s a three-hour (seems like five) waste of time and effort.

A creation of Pendragon Films and directed by Timothy Hines, the film’s claim to fame is its strict adherence to the book – including dialogue. That could work in the hands of skilled scriptwriters and filmmakers, but it does not in this film.

The acting is awful, the special effects are as cheesy as a Flash Gordon serial, the dialogue is stilted and stultifying. Awesomely bad.
