Post subject:  Exclusive 'Escape from the City' rerecording at iTunes

While nothing beats the original soundtrack recordings for Steven Spielberg's films conducted by John Williams (obviously!), I'm a sucker for re-recordings by talented orchestras. Rerecordings are like a film geek's version of cover bands in rock music, and there's something quite appealing to a well-covered musical work, especially one that offers unique variations to the listener.

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have long been doing justice to the works of John Williams, having re-recorded about over 20 compositions from the Spielberg/Williams collaboration over the years. Kunzel and the CPO even released a compilation of their performances on the album "The Great Movies Scores from the Films of Steven Spielberg," a compilation that spanned Spielberg's films from "The Sugarland Express" to "Saving Private Ryan," and even included rerecordings from the non-Williams "Poltergeist," "Twilight Zone The Movie" and "The Color Purple."

Fans collecting the CPO’s interpretations of Spielberg's themes can now add another interesting variation to their collections, as a new performance from 2005's "War of the Worlds" has been released as a recording for the first time ever.

The piece, the frenetic "Escape from the City," was released in conjunction with Kunzel and the CPOs brand new film score compilation "Great Film Fantasies" (a collection of tracks from the "Star Wars," "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" sagas.) As an exclusive bonus only available through iTunes, fans can download the track from "War" for only .99¢. The track is not available anywhere else, including the CD release of "Great Film Fantasies."

To listen to a thirty-second sample of the recording, or to purchase "Escape from the City," you must have iTunes installed on your computer.
