The movie (*** ½): Steven Spielberg finally gives film audiences his Sept. 11 film in War of the Worlds (Rated PG-13, DreamWorks SKG, $39.99 for limited edition or $29.99 for single disc), another adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic story of alien invasion.

The similarities to that tragic day are unmistakable -- an unseen, unknown enemy attacks the planet Earth unexpectedly, leading to fear, chaos, disorder and, ultimately, resolve. Those comparisons prove accurate, but Spielberg, with an assist from Tom Cruise, digs deeper into the psychological aspects of the attacks.

Amid the chaos we see people who want to attack without knowing who their enemy is and what its capabilities are. We also see the other side, where people (including leaders) scurry to protection. Spielberg asks the fundamental question: Which response is right? His answer: Both are.

Cruise stars as divorced father Ray Ferrier, a third-shift worker who has little time for his children, and gets disdain from his son, Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and ex-wife. Luckily, he's earned the respect of his daughter, Rachel (Dakota Fanning). They are going through the familial motions when the heavens seem to open up, with fiery balls smashing into the planet. Ray grabs his children and flees.

As they try to make it to his former in-laws' place, they have to contend with escalating attacks and those who have been mentally deranged by what's befallen. It's drama, real and heart-wrenching, at its best.

Equally spectacular: the special effects that give the aliens in the tale a new form. Spielberg proves once again why he is a consummate storyteller with the uncanny ability to make magic.

The disc (***): You won't find much to appreciate on the single disc version, but the special edition is fascinating.

Revisiting the Invasion looks at the original 1953 film and its relevance to today's version. The H.G. Wells Legacy examines the author of War of the Worlds through the eyes of some of his relatives, including grandson Martin Wells.

Steven Spielberg and The War of the Worlds explains the significance of the film to the director. In it we hear from Gene Barry, who co-starred in the original film along with Anne Robinson, who also provides her insights. There are also production diaries and galleries.

For Spielberg junkies there is the featurette We Are Not Alone, with the director talking about how his childhood experiences influenced his filmmaking.

I don't know why people keep trying to link Spielberg's film with 9,11. Yes of course there are similarities to that tragic day in 2001, if you look hard enough  but there are greater similarities to the book and you don't have to look for them, they are obvious.
