The War of the Worlds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Little Book of Horror: The War of the Worlds by Steve Niles and Ted McKeever is the Second Volume of the Unique Hardcover Horror Series.

San Diego, CA (April 18, 2005) Size doesn’t always matter. Especially when it comes to a good, old-fashioned tale of terror. In July, IDW Publishing is unleashing a new take on H.G. Wells’s classic science-fiction tale of alien assault.

Little Book Of Horror: The War of the Worlds is the second in a series of specially sized, hardcover collectible classics that re-tell some of the all-time classic masterpieces of horror. In this unique re-telling of H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds, writer Steve Niles (Little Book of Horror: Frankenstein, 30 Days Of Night) works from the original text of the timeless novel, presenting the tale in prose excerpts. Ted McKeever (Eddy Current) provides the stunning and otherworldly painted art of Martians bent on conquering the planet Earth.

“I’ve read H.G. Wells’s book and seen the movie based on that novel. And yet, it’s no hyperbole to say that Ted McKeever has managed to visualize the horrific look and feel of a dire alien invasion more effectively than anything I’ve ever seen before,” said IDW’s Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall. “His painted spreads on this book are simply stunning, as were Scott Morse’s on the previous Little Book of Horror. Working on these projects is really a dream, well, nightmare, come true.”

Little Book of Horror: The War of the Worlds, a full-color, 48-page, 6” x 9” HC, will be available in July.

I was a bit disappointed, to be honest. I love Ted McKeever's work (Metropol is fantastic) and was really looking forward to it, but whilst on the whole there are some striking images, I wasn't happy with the Martians themselves, they've been made semi-humanoid, and the text (not McKeever's responsibility, it should be stressed) is simplified to the point of absurdity. Bit of a missed opportunity, methinks...
