If you thought Wells' tripods couldn't walk think again. here's a link to three short films showing a real tripod walking.
STriDER is a three-legged robot that walks

It's poetry in motion.

Love it. The martian hood would have to somehow stay upright. But that could be done. Very alien mode of walking.

I second what Loz said.

Yes in one of the film clips it shows you strider being used for reconnaissance, presumably with a camera and a light how would they orientate those without a fixed base?

Still it looks cool.

Perhaps they made the legs like that and built the rest around it. At least it represents the "Walking Engine of Glittering Metal" exactly.

That's the trouble, there is no immobile surface to build the body on, as the machine walks the top surface of the platform becomes the underside of the platform, there is no surface that remains a constant.

Not even if the surface is completely round like a ball?

I can't see how, because the leg section of strider has to be free to rotate which means completely independent of any body section.

In any case, we're getting close to make our own 'Tripods' now. All we need to do is to make variations of them, and try to make them match the walking pattern of the Martian counterparts...

That should not be too hard to do. Then we can invade Mars!
