Has anyone ever seen an artist rendition of the biped creatures with coral like skelitons that the Martians feed on on Mars? Husks of them are found in the Cylanders after the Martians die. They are so fragile due to lower gravity on Mars that if they had arrived on Earth alive they would have died, by the crushing effects of our greater gravity. The Martians being boneless don't have this problem, but are crushed and sluggish once on Earth. They fed on these primatives from their home world on their journy to Earth before moving on to us. They have been missed out in the Jeff Wayne Album, the George Pal Film and nobody ever mentions them. I find them fascinating another dimension to the story and was wondering if anyone has ever come across them outside of the text?

Here you go the bit below is lifted from the book, it's in the Chapter - What we saw from the house. And it's during the description of the physiology of the Martians that the Journalist gives -

Their undeniable preference for men as their source of nourishment is partly explained by the nature of the remains of the victims they had brought with them as provisions from Mars. These creatures, to judge from the shrivelled remains that have fallen into human hands, were bipeds with flimsy, silicious skeletons (almost like those of the silicious sponges) and feeble musculature, standing about six feet high and having round, erect heads, and large eyes in flinty sockets. Two or three of these seem to have been brought in each cylinder, and all were killed before earth was reached. It was just as well for them, for the mere attempt to stand upright upon our planet would have broken every bone in their bodies.

Great stuff.

It's one of those books you just have to read again and again, like Dune. It keeps throwing up bits you don't remember. But I've never heard a discussion about these creatures. Are they on a parr with us? Are they more primative? The description of Martian physiology is my faverite part of the book. The fact that the offspring grow as buds on the outside of the Martians is great. They are sexless, have one ear and don't suffer from indigestion, and are not hormonal.

Unfortunately Wells does not say

But in Christopher Priest's sequel 'The Space Machine' they are more primative, :) but also more humanoid. :(

I've never read any of the sequals but know of them. I'd like to it's getting hold of them. Have you read Leauge of Extraordinary Gentleman Volume 2?

No not yet, I heard somewhere (don't ask me where) they may be making a film of it.

Did anybody notice in the first League of Extraordinary Gentleman film, the poster on the wall about the volcanos on Mars?

The Film hardly used the story in the first comic so I doubt the sequal will use the second volume. The film was really bad in my opinion and the comic pure genuis. But in Volume Two its War of the Worlds from the perspective of the League. It is very faithful with a fantastic twist on how the Martians bight the bug. The Invisable Man turns traitor and helps the Martains. And Mr Hyde topples a tripod all on his own, then eats the Martian. The Martians are done very faithfully, heads and tenticals and the heatray is invisable. I highly recomend it. Its very adult though, for instance Hydes revenge on The Invisable Man would never be in the film.

Back in December I actually e-mailed Lee and offered to write a concise summary of the events of the second series of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but for various reasons I've not had time to get around to it yet.

I love both series of The League, and rather than rush writing an essay on the second series, I want to spend time in getting it right. Moore and O'Neil's work deserves no less.

But it's coming Lee, I promise.

Incidently, I bumped into Alan Moore today - almost literally. He lives in my hometown of Northampton, and was entering our only comic shop (Phoenix Comix) as I was leaving.

Right, that's the shameless namedropping over with. Taxi!

Same here, used to get 2000a.d. meself anmd Nemesis when in was always a favourite of mine. And Kevin O'Neil's art was always better than Pat Mills. Some of his stuff was band in America. He also did Legends of the Dark Mite. A psycadelic tale of Bat Mite that he did in 92 for the highly acclaimed Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight series.

Post subject: Pendragons take on the Martian Take Away

SPOILER - For those of you who haven't seen the Pendragon version of War of the Worlds, just before The Journalist and Curate see the Martians feed on the Operah Singer, we see them drain some sort of cow like beast brought with them from Mars. I don't know why they changed the native food from humanoids creatures to these horned black things, but it is very poorly made.

There are pcs somewhere. McTodd might be able to help. If I take screen shots, the pictures are to big to post. ](*,)

That's odd. If I want to post things, I'll first check if they need a resizing.

Try this, it works 8-[

http://www.xemico.com/photogadget/

and free!

After you have installed it, right click on the image (supported ones are JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG, PCX, TGA ) and then enter in a size

600 pixels wide is a pretty good marker

Aye, I did - about the only thing that piqued my interest in the whole sorry saga...

As for the flimsy bipedal humanoidburgers from Mars, Christopher Priest uses them in 'The Space Machine', though he cheats a bit and makes them a little more substantial so as to form an important part of the plot...
