Nice eveofthewar, and the comic seems interesting... But somehow boring.

I mean, the only thing that can hurt him is Kryptonite, and the martians gotta be plain stupid if they gonna fight humans when they got the superman problem...

How to make a tripod:
1. Take a small wooden toy wheel (cheap in hobby stores)
2. Take three nails.
3. Figure the rest out yourself.

Pretty crazy.

Superman only comes into being when the Martians invade, he takes a few out, but Luthor ends up working for them and he captures Superman with Kryptonite. Blah blah... it aint great but the art is quite good, set in the 50's though.

Thanks Loz.

I would have loved them spending just as large amount on the story as the art... But they dont.

A Superman at the height of his powers...late 60's to early 80's (immune to Kryptonites of all kinds and anything else) could have single-handedly defeated the Martians. Perhaps in that world J'onn J'onz would have been the evil Martian leading his horde to attack Earth!

Yeah this Superman can't even fly, just mighty leaps. They had to power him down for the story to work. The Kingdom Come Superman would be quite unstoppable.

Actually, this story is set in 1938, nearly around the same time as Welles infamous radio broadcast.
The Superman depicted in the story is entirely accurate to his very first apperances in Action Comics (the cover of Action Comics no:1 is copied in the scene where Superman throws a car at a tripod leg) when Shuster and Sigel first created Superman he couldn't fly, had no heat or X-Ray vision and was less invulnerable than he is today. He also worked for the Daily Star, not the Planet and his boss was George Taylor, not Perry White.
So as things go, from the Superman side of things, its a pretty loving tribute to the characters early years.
I agree that the WOTW elements are not up to much but I think they went a lilttle too much in the drirection of Amazing Tales style pulp tribute.
I have to admit its one of my faves but then I'm a sucker for DC's Elseworlds line.
They've also done a Justice League Island of Dr Moreau with very mixed results.
Fan's of Victoriana would probably prefer JLA Days of Wonder.
Sorry to go on, a pet subject as you may of guessed!

Sorry I knew it was set in the 30's pre second world war. Don't know why I wrote 50's oh well. And your right about early Superman's abillities.
He can't fly in the Fliesher cartoons either.
I too love Elseworlds. Although sometimes the concept outweighs the content. The Vampire trilogy ones were the best. And the one where Kal El lands in the Waynes grounds rather than the Kents farm and so grows up to be Bruce Wayne and eventually Batman was really good too.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the imbalance on the Elseworlds line. I've been collecting them for about three years now and thanks to e-bay have almost all of them.
The Wayne/Kent swap one (Speeding Bullets) is one of my faves I must admit.
I dislike the way that they seem to 'right' themselves in the end, about 75% of them end up with the characters becoming as they were in the 'normal' continuity.
Batman: Detective 27 is a stand out one, they actualy have the guts to make a decent, thumping, period set adventure and have Bruce Wayne never become Batman at all.

All the annuals in the mid 90's, Can't rember which year without going into the shed, were Elseworlds. i got most of them but not quite all. The Superman one was basically - What if all of the Kryptonians had fled Krypton instead of just Kal El. They all arrive on Earth and take over. Batman and robin are freedom fighters. Its a fantastic one. Try and get it if you haven't already.

Yep, I have that one, the name escapes me but that was one of the better ones, a great idea too!
I liked the Feral Man of Steel from the same year in which Ka El crashes in the Indian jungle and is raised by wolves, that was pretty neat.
Have you seen any of the Tangent or Stan Lee's DC Universe lines?

I know of them through Wizard magazine but I didn't get them.
Have you read The Ultimates?

Yes! Just read the first two volumes and utterly loved them!
Was bidding on the first four volumes of Ultimate X-Men on ebay today funnily enough but was piiped to the post by a quid at the last second.
Not read any of the other Ulimate titles, Bryan Hitchs art work takes some beating and some of the other titles seem a little too cartoony for me.

How about Marvel 1602?
