The first time I ever heard of WOTW was in a comic book put out by the old "Classics Illustrated" company. This outfit put a good many of the great old novels into comic book form, including "Moby Dick", the "Iliad" and "Odyssey", "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", "The First Men in the Moon" (and the rest of the "biggies" by Wells and Verne), and "Faust". They also put out biographical comics about historical figures ranging from Joan of Arc to Buffalo Bill, as well as comics based on historical accounts like Caesar's commentaries on the conquest of Gaul and Bernal Diaz' account of how Cortez conquered Mexico. They also covered a few odds and ends, like zoo supplier Frank Buck's book "Bring 'Em Back Alive" (capturing dangerous animals all over Asia).
Naturally, the comic differed some from the novel. There was no "black smoke" used; just Heat-Rays. Although the events supposedly took place at the turn of the century, the human troops were dressed for World War I, steel helmets and all, and instead of being at the end of an arm, the Martian Heat-Ray projector was mounted in the head, like a cannon in a tank's turret. They DID have a great full-page picture showing the death of the "Thunder Child", though. If you can find any "Classics Illustrated" comic books, grab them, particularly if you have children, as they are a great way to introduce them to the classics of old.

Great to hear! I will be searching around soon enough.
Do you think there is a chance they may be found in sweden too? I think Ive heard something alike that. "Fairytales Illustrated" from the 50's Ive seen translated, so they may exist here too, but not sure.
How to make a tripod:
1. Take a small wooden toy wheel (cheap in hobby stores)
2. Take three nails.
3. Figure the rest out yourself.
Pretty crazy.

No more comments? Maybe there aren't that many comic book collectors in "Eve of the War". I don't know how many times the story was reprinted. My copy from from the late 1960/early 1970s period, and the cover showed three tripods advancing on a World War I artillery piece and its ragged, tin-hatted crew, the lead machine firing the Heat-Ray from its turreted "gun".

I'm still seeking for a good WOTW comic to add to my collection.
The Tempest is an advanced assault vehicle, which carries two heavy Heat-Rays and a Canister Launcher.

I'm sure I read recently that the old Classics Illustrated srip was being reprinted...
Over on Dr Zeus's site there's a nice photo of a recreation Frank Daniels made, with a little help from models and Photoshop, of the Classics Illustrated cover...

That picture's mostly like the cover of my copy. However, the soldier with the shell was in profile on mine, and you could see the legs of the man on the far left. Wonder what changes they've made with the other issues?

Do they remind you of the Scout Machine in the PC Game?

They haven't made any changes to the cover, that is a fan's reconstruction, depiction, interpretation, call it what you will, of the original Classics Illustrated cover using models and Photoshop - it is not a republication, or reprinting, or facsimile, call it what you will, of the comic itself.
