When I got the game I had Windows 98 and later 2000 and it worked just fine but now I have a new computer with XP and it won't load up at all, can't even get the animation.
My mate has a new computer and laptop and he can't get his to load either. He never got round to even watching the cut scenes the fool. I used to keep saying to him, stick it on and watch the animation, it's great especially from the Martians point of view.

I just think some old games are not compatible with XP. In fact XP is turning out to be a royal pain in the arse for me.

that happened to me too.

http://spacetarget.com/games/pc_war_of_the_worlds.shtml

You want to find the WOTW.ZIP file for download (it took me a little while to locate it). Once you've downloaded it, open the .zip file and copy the WOTW.EXE file to your hard drive. Then, either double click it, or replace the old .exe file with it.

i got this link from another forum that i am a member of. it shud work once u get this installed.

I'll give it a try but it's a bit like asking me to split the atom when it comes to this sort of thing.

Have you played the game right through before?

Have you seen the cut scene if you defeat the Martians?

All you need to do to fix it is to find the Autoexec.nt file in the Windows\Repair folder and copy it into Windows\System32.

try that i got it from a post on another wotw forum im a member of.

http://robk.proboards13.com/index.cgi?boar...&num=1111336099

you can go on this link, it takes you to the board and gives you solutions to a number of known problems. hope that helps keep me posted.

Got to be the Iron Clads for the humans and I used to like planting mines.

For the Martians, the origional fighting machines with advanced focused heatrays and black smoke. The Tempest was cool too.

Haven't tried yet, as I can't even install it, it gets to 90 0dd percent and says there is an error. I't scratched because I used to play the tunes on it a lot, the blue disk has Dead London on it and I love that version of it.

I'll borrow my mates one and see if that installs and then use your link.

All the tunes play with no sticking or that though.

Its a bloody hard game, harder than Command and Conquer and other strategy games.
Don't play defensively play to overthrow.

yeah its very hard. even after i had only been playing for an hour maybe the humans started sending attack forces of 50+. even a unit of fighting machines find it hard against that many human vehicles. i generally mix my strategy, i build up the defences of the frontline sectors and probe at an enemy sector.

Yeah you have to have some defenses. But do you persue better armour technolagy or more effective heatray technolagy first?

i usually go for the heatray technology first, just to give my machines the added firepower. armour is important and that is researched straight after. just had a huge battle trying to take over the lake district, it was a nasty battle i only just won it! dam those ironclads!

Did you guys have trouble when fighting an Invincible Class Ironclad? I didn't, since I had a Tempest - 3rd Gen with me. That ship didn't stand a chance. My Tempest had only some minor damage after the battle... but on an other occasion the Ironclads can be a Martian eyesore litterally.

I haven't played the game for years but I agree those Iron Clads were a nightmare unless you had the Tempest and some Bombardment Machines Bombing them from a distance.

I made an animated screenshot of the Tempest - 3rd Gen. It's 467 KB though, so I can't upload it to show it to you...
