So this is an RTS game right?

Post subject:

It is. The battles can take place on day or night. It depends on the time of day the battle takes place.

What sort of units are we talking about? different types of tripods?

The Martian Machines are different. Here's a sum with the machines + the number of the legs they walk on:

2 legs: Bombarding Machine
3 legs: Scout Machine, Fighting Machine
4 legs: Tempest, Scanning Machine, Constrictor, Digging Mechanism
5 legs: Xeno-Telepath
6 legs: Handling Machine, Electric Machine, Drone
The Flying Machine has no legs since it is an airborne machine. You need a lot of these to fight off Ironclads at the open sea.

Are we talking about the new game, or the old one? :?

the 1998 one apparently, sounds interesting...whats the generalised story?

The story is the same as H.G's. A Martian cylinder lands on Horsell Common and it's occupants attacked civilian and military targets. In the Human opening sequence, the Journalist gives us the exact same info as what happened as what he said in the Musical Version (Richard Burton did the vocals). The Martian opening sequence, it begins on Mars where the previous Martian Elder is telepathically executed, and the new Elder decides to plan the attack on Earth, with full reports of the first cylinder. The First cylindes somehow was destroyed by the Human Army, forcing the Martians to relocate the other cylinders to a more secure location: the Grampian Mountains in Scotland. From that point the game starts.

And as a fan...what did you think of the gameplay, the experience?

Post subject:

The gameplay is excellent, and the experience I underwent is great!

It takes a little bit of mastering, but once you are into it it is a very, very addictive game. You have to decide which technologies you are going to invest in first. You can play human or martian. The humans, can lay mines, and build submarines. The martians can build, Heatray turrets defences and black smoke launchers.

You have to use the resources of the areas too, such as heavey elements and blood farms for the Martians and coal mines for the humans.

The movie clip bits are fantastic. You actually get to look out from inside a tripod at one bit.

To correct ovever. Burton is on the game narating a bit, but an army officer played by Nigel Hawthorne, (madness of King George) takes over the naration.

The big difference to the origional story, aprt from the martians relocating to Scotland after an intial defeat at Horsel common, is the fact that the Martians don't die from bugs. They either win or lose to human efforts.

There is also a playstaion game that came out at the same time and has the same scenes, music and machines. Totally different game though. You play humans in that, you have a number of vehicles you can use and it is quite hard at the end. You get to be the Thunder Child for one section and capture a flying machine too.

Post subject:

What? So the humans actually took over a Flying Machine to use it against the Martians?

Author:  Loz [ Tue Aug 16, 2005 4:08 pm ]
Post subject:

Yes. towards the end of the game you have to help capture one and then latwer you get to fly it. It is vert agile and nimble but a bit hard to controle. very fast too. but easily destroyed if targeted.
You have to recue capture humans from blood farms, so you have to get right in and past all the defences. Best way is to keep moving. You can always come back and do more damage.

The PS game has one less track than the PC game. don't know why. It doesn't have the dead london track.

That's a shame. Obviously there wasn't enough data left on the disc...

At the end of the Thunder Child Level, the boss that you have to take out is a Tempest. You can't avoid its onslaught; so you just have to aim well and blow out all its weapons. Then you can take it down but you'll only have the tinyist amount of life force left.

The Tempest must be the 1st Gen, I presume. Like I said somewhere else, I can use a single Tempest of the 3rd Gen to take out an Invincible Class Ironclad without the slightest difficulty.

doesnt sound so invinsable!

That's right, but if I choose the Human Side I'd love to build them to waste Martian bases at the coast.

Post subject:

Heh, me too, but theyre really annoying when you are the Martians with those coastal bases! :)

Well, then I'll make sure I've got an armada of Tempests, Bombarding Machines and Canister Launcher Defences ready.

Post subject:

Yup, sounds good to me. It's not good though, when all you've got is three Scout Machines - 1st Gen. :)

Author:  oever532 [ Sat Aug 20, 2005 2:28 pm ]
Post subject:

Nope, but I'll kick their asses the minute I've got some reinforcements. The best unit tactic is this: Concentrate first on all 1st Gen Machines. If you have 2nd Gen available, replace the build task of the 1st Gen with the 2nd Gen Versions, and repeat this processwith the 3rd Gen.

The only trouble I have in the game is the Resources. I always go OTT. I usually end up using the cheat! [-X

Author:  oever532 [ Sat Aug 20, 2005 2:35 pm ]
Post subject:

If there's enough supply of a resource (50 - 70 tons) then I'll let the Handling Machine construct at least 5 of the resource buildings which components are abundant in that sector.

Author:  Sam [ Sat Aug 20, 2005 2:37 pm ]
Post subject:

I do the same, but I still end up going OTT lol.

What does OTT mean? :-k
