Post subject:  WOTW Multiplayer - Managed to link 2 computers successfully!

Hey Everyone

I've gone on about this before, but theres lotsa new people here now so maybe they have the answer!

Wotw - a great game. But it lacks a multiplayer version. Where one can be human and one can be Martian and attempt to annihilate each other over a Local Area Network.

Today, I managed to successfully link two computers together by editing the registry slightly. The main computer was the human game, and the secondary computer was the Martians. Well call the main computer A and the Secondary computer B.

The game loaded successfully. Computer B joined a game launched by computer A and the map of Britain came up. Each computer had to advance time together for it to be synchronised with the other computer. (This evidently shows that the computers were linked.) The time flashed on the computers until they were both started.

However, the Martian pods landed in different locations. Battles happened on one computer where on the other, you had to sit there and wait for the battle to be over, until you could advance time together. It was like two different games were being played, but the time had to be synchronised.

After a few battles, or when one of the players lost to the computer, the game crashed.

Thats a heck of a lotta writing! All I'm saying is it must be possible to somehow link the game successfully, without there being two games being played at once. Has anyone managed to do it?

What? You managed to play the PC Game in Multiplayer?

That is correct.. im some aspects. But they were two different games lol. But the date HAD to be the same on both comps, therefore its obviously they were linked.

Try it out for yourself. If you have the game and a LAN, Click Run, and type Regedit. Go down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds, 1.00.000. Change the 'Enable Multiplayer Version from 0 to 1', (on both computers), and then on the human computer, go down to the Network subfolder, and check the 'I am Human' tab to 1. Then load the game, and a whole new menu appears. On the human computer, click Start new Multiplayer Campaign (or summit like that) and click IPX or TCP/IP. (I used IPX, but not all LANs have that.) Then on the Martian comp, click Join Multiplayer game and it will show. Then you can see for yourself..

Warning!! Do not muck up your registry! It worked perfectly fine for me, and remember to change everything you did back. Don't hold me responsible for something you do! And also, you cannot start new games and save them when 'Enable Multiplayer Version' tab has a value of 1. So make sure you set it back!

Too bad we're living far away from each other. I live in the Netherlands, you live in Wales. That is a great distance.

Yeah, I know. Also, I tried it on a LAN, not the net. I think its very unlikely that we would be able to establish a connection on the internet..
Unless I.P. addresses, etc. were made, or someone made a mod? (hint hint) :)

Yeah. Of course, Oever, I'd give you a run for ya money! :P

Nah, you'd probably kick my butt lol.

Anyways, how do you think we could do it?

We could have a good period. Building up our territories and then battling 'til the last man/machine standing survives...

I don't know... I'll have to ask that to my uncle. He knows more about computers than I do. By the way, I fixed the problem that the computer got stuck when I played the game WOTW..., I just defragmented the Hard disk and everything was fine.

Cool, the main problem though is that two different games appear to run at the same time, instead of one..

Right... and if one of us quits?

I'm not sure, I've never tried that. Do you have MSN messenger, Oever? If we wanted to try this it would be easier to talk instantly..

Okay, cool, whenever we want to try it, we'll go there to chat :)

Post subject:

I'm totally forbidden to chat, that's the major problem. :( My mother don't want me to be involved in dangerous things, giving away my address and all that... and to be honest I keep myself safe. :| But it was a nice offer. :)

Yeah, fair enough. Well, we'll just have to do with this then lol :D
