Livermore twist to 'War of the Worlds'
Library to re-enact 1938 radio broadcast
By Lea Blevins, STAFF WRITER

LIVERMORE — The Livermore Public Library may have the town's people shaking in their boots Monday night.
Aliens are scheduled to invade the Bay Area, and the Livermore library will be the only place to hear all the news.

But these won't be real aliens — only aliens in a re-enactment of Orson Welles' famous 1938 radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds."

This time it promises to have a "Livermore twist."

"It should be really fun," librarian Mary Sue Nocar said.

Nocar got the idea a couple months ago after hearing about Steven Spielberg's recently released "War of the Worlds" movie.

The library's presentation will be centered around a simulated radio broadcast for audience members to watch as well as hear.

"Our idea was that it might be interesting to see how a radio station works," Nocar said.

The main difference will be that locations from New Jersey and New York in the original broadcast will be changed to names of local landmarks, such as Del Valle

Regional Park, to give the show what Nocar calls "Livermore flavor."
Attendees can expect to hear at least one account from someone who experienced the original broadcast, which caused mass panic by people who thought the scripted words they were hearing were factual.

Despite the fright from that broadcast, the library is encouraging people of all ages — including families with school-age children — to attend the free show.

"We promise to have no aliens," Nocar joked.

She said she's hoping it will be a fun and educational experience.

"War of the Worlds ... with a Livermore Twist" will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Civic Center Library, 1188 S. Livermore Ave. in Livermore. For more information, call (925) 373-5500.
