Just found an old article on the BBC's website, dated Oct 31 1998

It suggests there wasn't much of a panic at all after the radio broadcast .... :alien2:

"The following days' newspapers said many panicked but a new assessment of what happened that night suggests the hysteria has been exaggerated. According to Robert Bartholomew of James Cook University in Australia, panic was the exception and not the rule..."

For the full article - CLICK HERE

I have a book 'the world's greatest mistakes' which says the panic was so great "that sailors in the US navy were recalled to their ships to defend America" :o  sounds like panic to me.

You have to remember europe was on the eve of war (no pun intended) and the American people were affraid they were going to get draged into another bloody mess, (not of there making this time). so paranoia was rife at the time.

A school of thought has emerged in the last few years which proposes that the scale of the panic was exaggerated by the media at the time, and has since become a combination of modern folklore and urban myth.

The truth about what happened will probably never conclusively proved one way or the other, and will most likely remain a matter of opinion.
Bartholomew's conclusions, based on considerable investigation and evidence, is widely accepted by sociologists and scientists. See http://www.csicop.org/si/9811/martian.html for more information.

Also check out his new book (with Hillary Evans) "Panic Attacks," which deals with the so-called panic as well.
http://www.suttonpublishing.co.uk/webapp/w...24549&langId=-1
