Post subject:  War Of The Worlds On Stage At The Playhouse

In 1938 Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on The Air broadcast an adaptation of HG Wells seminal science fiction novel, The War of the Worlds. Written to sound like a new broadcast, many people actually believed that an alien invasion of earth had taken place. Panic ensued. Orson Welles had created the ultimate trick or treat for Halloween.

Now Welles' groundbreaking, infamous broadcast is brought to life on stage at the Playhouse, Artillery Street, as the Orbit Theatre Company in association with Context Galleries, present a staged version of The War of the Worlds, bringing to life the world of the Mercury Theatre, its mercurial director and his unique vision.

Running from Thursday 27 until Saturday 29 October, The War of the Worlds is presented as part of Context Galleries Damaged Collateral exhibition.

Taking a step back to the Golden Age of Radio, the War of The Worlds is a vivid evocation of a time long gone, when the Spoken Word not the moving image was supreme and audiences were challenged to use their imaginations.

Performance Time: 8 pm (Except Thurs 27 when the performance begins at 9 pm). Tickets: £5/ £3 (Free Thurs 27). Box Office: 028 7126 8027.
