Post subject:  Martian Flesh

In the Dead London picture in the booklet, we see the bird in the right hand corner ripping flesh from a Martian. We can see pale green scales and red flesh from underneath these scales. So what are we actually seeing here. If we could pull back until we could see the whole of what the bird is eating, what would we see?
It kind of doesn't make sense with the rest of what we can see.

Thats an easy one Loz :a103: We are seeing the crow standing on the green tracsparent hood of a FM and pulling the Martian flesh through a hole. this has been mentioned in another thread a while ago.

No that was about the eyes of FM's. Being Flesh or something else. So the FM with the hole in the window was what was discussed. I'm talking about a viasable bit of Martian skin. And we are not seeing it through the windows. So if the hood is open and the martian inside is exposed, then where is the hood on the FM's?

The green bit is the Hood/window  the bird has made a hole in it and is pulling the Martian's flesh through it ](*,)

Are you talking about the fighting machine that we can see in the distance. With a small hole in the window? Which isn't the one I'm taling about, or the bird that is very close up on the right which is ripping a large chunk of flesh bfrom a scaley body, which isn't through a window? Which is what I'm taliking about. ](*,)

I am also talking about the one in the foreground what do you think the white rim around the green is? it the rim around the hood/window.
The birds have torn a hole in the hood of this FM just like they've done to the FM in the distance ](*,)

Here is a rough sketch of what I think we are looking at,
Of course the FM should be much, much bigger than this but you should get the point.

Thanks, Lonesome. I was all the time wondering what it was.

Wow thats just what I wanted your a star. My only gripe would be, how have the birds completely eaten away the hood, so smoothly without any jagged bits around the rim. But you've done what I asked. Your a genius and I salute you. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> :D \:D/

My other oproblem with it is that it makes the martian inside to big for the larger than a bear discription. And is at odds with the Martian designs that where in the computer games. Which were brown and not scaley. Also the scales don't look like wet leather. :-k

I'm begining to wonder whether you are pulling my pi**er. [-X
The birds have not eaten away the hood, they have just made a small hole in the green dome of the hood, The hood looks like an insects compound eye. The Martian is not green and scaly, the only bit of the Martian you can see is the little bit of meat being dragged through the hole in the hood.
The green Samantha Fox bits are no more than a windscreen behind which a Martian sits. please try to understand :a010: or I think I'll go mad :a091:

Okay I get what you are saying. But why do the hood windows not look like compound eyes on any of the other images of them, and why are they a much lighter green in this picture. And they look nothing like a compound eye. they are scales which overlap each other. Surely if the hood windows are made up of plate like scales then the other FM is close enough for them to be shown in detail too.
Your probably right. But I just think that the artist has been inconsistant here.

well as I said the FM I sketched should be Much, Much bigger,

and why are they a much lighter green in this picture.

they are lighter green because the artist is showing a lot of highlight (This is how I would have done it as well)

below is a Photo of a compound Eye, the bit in the red box is like the bit of the hood in the painting, you can only see the tops of each blister

No I don't think it is close enough. I do have a picture of the Handling Machine where you can clearly see the compound structure.

Okay but you can clearly see that a compound eye is made up of hexagons. Even on the curves. And the ones on the picture are more like scales. I have seen pictures of the martian machines with Hexagon like cells covering the eyes. On the cover of the remix album and the Playstation game. I've seen pencil drawings too. Plus in the PC game and playstation games cut scenes. On all of those pictures the hoods are very small as the FM's are small on the cd covers etc and you can see the hexagons clearly. So they don't have to be large to be seen.
Anyway I think your right.
But the martian inside must be ver close to the windows for the birds to be able to sit atop one of the sphere like sections and pluck out flesh from the inside.

But that is down to artistic license, Geoff Taylor's Dead London was painted in the 70s, just because someone decides to change the size of the hexagons years later it doesn't mean Taylor's picture is wrong.
In Dead London we see a crow on the Hood of a FM, the blisters (side view of the hexagons) are about the same size as the crow's body, about 8-9 inches, when you consider the hood is about 30 - 40 feet across how much do you think you would see. not a lot, me thinks.

And here's one more. This picture of a moth's eye is almost perfect for the Dead London scene, even the highlights on the top of each dome is practically the same.
O:) I've coloured it green for you, to help you understand, if you like, I could put a little crow on it, if it makes it easier for you :a016:
