A short time ago, on another forum, I first heard about this musical version of "War of the Worlds". I haven't seen or heard it yet, and I confess, fighting and singing don't mix well with me, at least not when they take place at the same time. It sounds more like "West Side Story" than any sort of war movie, sci fi or not.

Consider: Can't you just imagine the opening scene of a musical WOTW film, with the leaders of Mars having just been told by their scientists that their lousy old planet is dying, and naturally sinking into depression. Then, the chief strategic planner of Mars comes on stage as the lights go down, singing:

There's a place for us (It's called Earth);
A brand-new place for us.
With water in abundance beyond compare;
Build the invasion force, and we're halfway there;
Somewhere, somewhereeeeeee.

As the Martian leaders question whether their forces can actually pull it off, the planet's weapons designers assure them it's possible:

We are witty, oh so witty;
We are witty, when it comes to light.
Our Heat-Rays, will enable us to win the fight.

See the human cannons in the field there;
See them explode in blasts beyond compare.
See the soldiers die, while the survivors scream;
All because of our invisible beammmmm.

We are witty, oh so witty;
We are witty, when it comes to light.
Our Heat-Rays, will obliterate everything in sight.

Finally, the moment of decision arrives, and the invasion force is launched. And as the cylinders speed on their way to Earth, we hear the troops inside singing:

There'll be a rumble tonight;
There'll be a rumble tonight.
There's gonna be a rumble;
And Earth is gonna crumble tonight.

While in another cylinder, we hear another song:

Tonight, tonight, is not just any night;
Tonight's the night there'll be a big fight.
Tonight, tonight, is not just any night;
Tonight's the night Earth faces our might.

We'll smash the earthlings with our rays;
And leave their survivors in a daze;
Because our troops' burning craze;
Will create a huge smoky haze.

Tonight, tonight, is not just any night;
Tonight's the night there'll be a big fight.
Tonight, tonight, is not just any night;
Tonight's the night Earth faces our might.

It sounds like your 'long' overdue to listen to this album - nothing like that at all.

Oh, welcome to the forum :D

Hi Alland and welcome

I am always amazed how many people, who claim to be WOTW fans (and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you aren't a fan) have never heard the musical version. for so many of us, it was our first introduction to Wells' work, I have gone on to read many of his Sci/Fi stories with great pleasure but the musical will always be regarded as one of my favourite versions.

Go out and buy a copy :D

I figured the musical version isn't like what I put down; I was being witty and ironic. I'll try to find a copy of the original musical, though I'll probably have to get a used copy over the Internet. But like I said earlier, fighting and singing don't really mix in my book, no matter how good the singing might be.

I'm sorry dude but its nothing like what your imagining. It is completely different. To be honest I don't think there is anything you can compare it too, you certainly can't compare it West Side Story there is no resmblence at all.

I highly recommend you listen to it, there are a lot of sound effects etc all you need is a good imagination.

Hope you get to listen to it soon as you really are missing out.

We did get that you were being witty and ironic and as Martian Myster said there's nothing realy to compare to it, the closest I can think of ( apart from Jeff Wayne's SPARTACUS) is Clive Noland & Oliver Wakeman's "JABBERWOCKY" or their version of 'THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES' (All three are very good but lack the impact of 'The War of the Worlds')

It's also not dissimilar in structure to Rick Wakeman's 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' or 'King Arthur..' but the music hasn't, IMO, dated quite so badly as RW's efforts.

Yes I'd forgotten those, and there's Wakeman's return to the center of the earth (disappointing and a bit too frivolous for my taste).
