Hey Everyone, Long time no see!

I was just thinking earlier. In the book, HG Wells describes that the first of the meteors is seen on the 2nd of August. However, in the musical, the meteors are seen on the 12th of August. Why do you think this has been changed?

Also, every year the Earth goes through comet and asteroid debris, and the 12th of August is one of the four or five times that the Earth goes through one of these debris fields. The meteor showers last a week or so each way. Do you think that Wells got the inspiration from these Meteor Showers, and possibly Jeff Wayne changed it to be more scientifically accurate, or do you think this is just coincidence?

Just wondering what everyone else thinks!

Good to be back! :D

Hmmm. Don't know. Love to find out.

Another strange mistake is the bit where the Journalist says "Across Two-Hundred Million Miles of void came the first of the missiles...

Mars is meant to be at its closest at the time of the attack, which is only 35 million miles. Mars is never as far away as 200 million miles even at its farthest. :-k

Hmm, thats another great point! Thanks Loz!

Thats really weird. It's like the journalist thought that the Martians were coming from Jupiter.. :)

Anyone got answers to our questions, and/or other mysterious errors that have been made in the novel/musical?

The "200 million miles" quote is not the original narration, it was changed from the recordings made at the Los Angeles studios when Richard Burton was present. The first recordings had Burton say "13 million miles" as apossed to the final cut of "200". I really have no idea as to why the changes other than sounding better from a 'musical' point of view.

Hi 'Sam' long, long time no see, welcome back :D

I'm a little confused by your question. I cant find where it says The 2nd of August :? in the book.
I found this passage in Chapter One
Quote:
The storm burst upon us six years ago now. As Mars approached opposition, Lavelle of Java set the wires of the astronomical exchange palpitating with the amazing intelligence of a huge outbreak of incandescent gas upon the planet. It had occurred towards midnight of the twelfth; and the spectroscope, to which he had at once resorted, indicated a mass of flaming gas, chiefly hydrogen, moving with an enormous velocity towards this earth. This jet of fire had become invisible about a quarter past twelve. He compared it to a colossal puff of flame suddenly and violently squirted out of the planet, "as flaming gases rushed out of a gun."

Can you let me know where it says the 2nd :-k

I have just found this bit, also in Chapter One
Quote:
During the opposition of 1894 a great light was seen on the illuminated part of the disk, first at the Lick Observatory, then by Perrotin of Nice, and then by other observers. English readers heard of it first in the issue of Nature dated August 2. I am inclined to think that this blaze may have been the casting of the huge gun, in the vast pit sunk into their planet, from which their shots were fired at us. Peculiar markings, as yet unexplained, were seen near the site of that outbreak during the next two oppositions.

but that's just the publication date of the magazine.

:D I think I see where you've gone wrong. The magazine 'Nature' was published on the 2nd August 1894 and says "a great light was seen on the illuminated part of the disk" This is thought to have been the casting of the great gun on Mars. This publication came out years before the invasion started, about 6 years before the first Meteorite fell to Earth.
And no I didn't see the shooting stars last night, too much cloud cover :a009:

Well, I live in a town, and I need to go to deserted places or campings to actually see them. And the Sky must be clear, too.

Just in case we never hear from LC again, anyone know where he lives? We could at least gather up the ashes for a proper burial.

I'd think that either he's wise and hauled ass out of his region, or whatever has landed leaves him alone...
